Thing is the cable companies needed to roll out DOCSIS 3 in order to be competitive with even U-verse's 24mbps speeds.
Now that it's deployed, there's no good reason for them to not use it to its potential. It doesn't cost them a lot more to open it up, and it might entice some people to pay more for the higher tiers.
At least Cox's pricing makes sense. TWC wants a LOT more for 50/5 vs. 30/5.
