Broadcom chipset and works well on higher ADSL2+ profiles.

Another good choice, a bit cheaper, they don't like to get as cute with their firmware as D-Link does, also bcm chipset. Same interface as your 8816 or close enough to it. Warning: The only other TP-Link modems worth buying are the 8950 and the 8960 and they've been disco'd in favour of inferior devices.

The 8840T is Trendchip same as the 8816 but with 4 ports. The old 8840 without the T was broadcom based.

Thanks for the warning, they slipped that one past me. Ok, so there's only one choice on the market now (reasonably priced BCM modem).

since the time bell moved me to an IKNS device, oddly enough the Bell Sagemcom F@st has been more stable for me on 19/0.8 then both the tp-link 8816 and the ST516.

It's overpriced. The D-Link uses the same chipset and costs less.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend my the D-Link, it's handles my line better than the the Thomson 516. And yes, the TP 8816 just can't handle ADSL2 in my opinion.

The 8816 handles the lower ADSL2+ profiles but some people reports problems on the 19455/1085 profile. Depends on your line. The Broadcom modems seem to handle the higher profile better.

Another good choice is an unlocked 2wire.

That's my experience, My profile is 19455/797 and the 8816 couldn't handle it. And I find the ST516 overrated because it's not reliable (overheating).

The D-Link on the other hand fills its purpose since it's a set it and forget it device.

Exactly. Best $28 I ever spent.
