That was not as informing as I would have liked. Too few specifics and no explanation of technology, just a bunch of generic comments.

the problem is it's intel. They do not want to disclose anything at all.

Oh, were you there? A good reporter would push for some real information. That video was like a TV commercial.

no it was not the video published by NCIX. I went to WD in CA and quickly got shown the door.

Agreed. This is just pure, absolute, 100% marketing fluff -- this is the exact sort of information that "PC enthusiasts" latch on to because of their lack of understanding of the actual underlying technology. Take a look at the titles of the people interviewed:

- James Myers, Applications Engineering Manager
- Arbin Kumar, Systems Quality and Reliability Team (i.e. manager)
- Alan Frost, Marketing Communications Manager
- Allison Goodman, SSD System Integrator (I have not the slightest idea what this means)

I would expect the 2nd and 4th people to provide the most technical insights -- however in both cases during the interview (especially the last), technical questions were asked and vague, ambiguous, and nonsensical responses were issued. Details aren't provided because those individuals value their job (and I say that respectfully) -- any official statements made on camera or to the press have to be approved by PR folks and, to some degree, executives. I don't need to expand further. This is the world we live in, and it's a sad state of affairs.

Anyway, despite what the 2nd person said, NAND flash is a dead-end. In fact, Moore's law is referenced in this fellow's statements as if to say "smaller lithographies means better everything" -- in the case of NAND, that is not the case. You'll see that Micron's own statements (see the video, roughly 2:35 onward) conflict with what Intel said. FusionIO has the same opinion. It's safe to say Intel knows all of this as well, just that it isn't something they propagate PR-wise for reasons that, again, I don't need to expand on. Things like PRAM are looking more promising; my own opinion is that we should have gone with memristors (further reading).

Remember: the reason why SSDs perform so well in comparison to MHDDs is the effective removal of seek time. Yes, there are a lot of other things that come into play too, but even the first and 2nd generation SSDs stomped all over MHDDs as far as "performance" went. The evolution since then has been how to increase capacity and increase performance even more -- but a barrier (see above) will be reached eventually.

P.S. -- Didn't I tell you ( jchambers28 See Profile) some time ago to stop watching NCIX videos? :P And I'm not surprised WD showed you the way out -- Seagate would do this, Samsung would do this, OCZ would do this, etc.. You have to schedule those visits, usually through PR folks, and such visits are often done solely to provide a positive image for the company showing off its facilities (i.e. hoping for a stock price increase). Tours of companies or facilities being given to generic folks ended in the early 80s.

I can't believe, chambers, that you actually went to WD and asked for a tour. What were you thinking? Did you actually think they let people off the street tour their fabs? Do you understand clean rooms and the protocols that keep them, erm, clean?

I worked in a clean room, we called it "the fish tank" because well healed investors were allowed to come in and watch us work, for a minute, but they had to be very rich and powerful investors with appointments. And they actually DIDN'T come in, they were brought to a massive window and stood there, stupidly, and stared at us. We would even put on a show (the bosses loved that), by looking as professional and cool as we could in our bunny suits. Investors especially loved my work stations, optical benches (replete with 30+ optical elements, LASERs, and product mounted on them). The one thing that kept me from laughing at these tourists is that they were rich and powerful, even though they were clueless, and I might have had a little bit of skill and training, but I was FAR from rich or powerful.

My last day working there I was even escorted because security was so tight (it was/is their standard practice). These companies are very restrictive. That wafer he is holding up is either defective or a *partial* test run. No way would they let him get within 30 feet of a good wafer, do you have any idea how much that one is worth? It's man made gold, literally. And wafers are NEVER Handled that way, human hands don't reach into wafer boats and pull out wafers, it's all robotic.

He isn't even wearing clean room garb, if he was properly garbed, you wouldn't even see his eyes clearly. That guy is a marketing tool, I feel no respect for him, he probably has about less training than I have (I only have a 2 year degree, not enough for many jobs). And I'm not even working in the trade these days (going back to school soon). This is fluff and a waste of time. No offense, but why did you post this?

Doesn't matter if it is a clean room or not, *no* high tech company lets people in off the street for a tour of any building.

I had a friend of mine just walk into the local offices of Intel and ask the front desk if he could just look around... they turned him around and showed him the door. And for the most part, it would have just been looking at a cube farm

Luckily he met me - so I gave him a tour
