Kruisey join:2006-12-30 Vancouver, BC | Smart TV When the TV box is off one can still access internet and Utube and much more on the smart TV screen. Is this using free Wi Fi? |

Mike_C join:2007-07-19 Vancouver, BC | Isn't Smart TV part of the TV itself, not the Telus box? |

TheMGPremium join:2007-09-04 Canada kudos:1 | reply to Kruisey Smart TVs use your internet connection for their "smart" functions. You have to provide internet access to the TV, either through an ethernet cable to your router, or by connecting it to your WiFi network.
I don't know if there are Smart TVs that can use HPNA for internet connection. There might be. |

| reply to Kruisey Wifi isn't free, but yes, technically, free other than your home internet charges. You may want to go into your settings of the TV to ensure they are using the lowest video quality that is acceptable to you. Many use up to 1.3 GB /hour. But that can be switched down to as low as 300MB/hour for Netflix and about 500MB/hour for HuluPlus. You can do some homework and change other settings on your TV so you can get content not allowed in Canada. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

Regarding the internet usage limits, yes, if you connect it to your internet, anything you do using the "smart" features of the TV and that uses the internet, will count toward your usage. |

 | Re: Smart TV 5: How do you think you're qualified to cheerlead for Optik and give advise to other people when you obviously have very little knowledge about networking and online video/IPTV?
Of course it comes out of your Telus cap. Where else is the bandwidth going to come from? |

Kruisey join:2006-12-30 Vancouver, BC | reply to Anon Thank you for letting me know that fact pb2k . know. I know maybe this is just a forum for Technicians. Then maybe the name of it should be changed. My subject was about Telus TV but with a Smart Page .I only bought this end of last year and the Smart section is a learning process for me because it was delivered with no instructions. |
|
 | Well technically you are asking about your internet connection so it is the right forum. Its just very hard to figure that out from how it is worded.
We're not saying its for technicians, just that answering people based on what you believe instead of what you know does not help anyone. Unless you know something well enough to be able to back it up with facts and sources, it only confuses other people. |

| reply to Kruisey If you're using the Smart TV you would have had to set it up to connect to a wireless network. If it connected without you doing anything, and it's working somehow, then you have free wifi from somewhere else. It doesn't have built-in cellular. Just wifi. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| reply to Kruisey said by Kruisey:Therefore although I have broadband turned off from TV I am still using the wireless part of my account which is part of my account usage.? You're confusing me. If you either are using your Internet or not. If you shut down your home network and leave TV on, you don't use your Internet. Just don't use your phone as a hotspot for the TV.
Again, though, YOU have to set everything up. If you never set anything up then the TV isn't using your wireless, Internet, or anything of yours other than electric. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

 | reply to Kruisey Yes, you would be using part of your allowance / cap. |
