9:50 p.m. from a business class line in the Tampa Bay area. Not sure why I got sent to the Detroit server this evening-- usually hit the Birmingham server. |

Keiro join:2005-10-25 Bakersfield, CA kudos:1 | reply to Guide_Tim What's the BHN speed test servers? I keep forgetting them. I returned to BHN in January, so I'm happy to have Lightning again.
Also, I have Lightning, as well. I use my DIR-655 with the given modem... disabled wifi on it.
My laptop's hardwired to the router, so no issues there... but for now, I'll have to do the tests later in the evening, and morning after.
I am also located in Bakersfield. -- Wanderer of the Stars...

Keiro join:2005-10-25 Bakersfield, CA kudos:1 | said by ebenhe:could u get this speed on wireless test? ... Wut, I had to retype up my answer. Bah!
Anyways...
That's a debatable question. I would say no.
Why?
Well, three reasons, really, it has to do with how wireless works in general.
1. The manufacturer tends to advertise the router's specs. And along with those specs, they assume you'll have equivalent hardware handy. You know, you generally get best results with wireless N routers and wireless N network cards in a given computer.
2. Then there's the spec of the standards that the routers comply with. You have only so much to work with and must ensure that the device is capable of working with or without interference.
3. Law of physics. The router might say it gets you 300Mbps wireless access. but that's only on the local area network! In actual, real-world use, you might be lucky to hit anywhere between 50 Mbps to 150Mbps. This is especially true if you have concrete or some other signal-interfering component in the walls.
Ever heard of the Faraday Cage? It's like that, with cement and stuff around your home.
And then there's the Internet outside of your home. The ISP sets up their hardware and provides only so much bandwidth in a given area. Something like 32 homes per... some metric, I don't quite remember what metric it was, but the network engineers have typically figured out the best optimized setup per given area so that everyone has more or less good bandwidth at any given time.
And then there's the condition of the wiring. If you have crap wiring, you'll get crap Internet. So it goes.
I hope I made it easy to understand why. -- Wanderer of the Stars...

Other wireless devices you have in your home including microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, webcams, wireless speaker systems (my own personal example Vizio), alarm systems and many other devices will also impact wireless performance in either the 2.4 or 5 ghz ranges. |

Keiro join:2005-10-25 Bakersfield, CA kudos:1 | reply to Guide_Tim So I just had my service transferred to my current address.
Speeds are as follows:
D: 43.97Mbps U: 4.77Mbps
... Also, after the local contractors ran the new wiring for me, due to the current wiring being way too old, they eventually had to replace my current modem with a new one because, amusingly, my suspicion that I commented to the technicians in the room with me, was accurate.
It turned out that the storms last night finally took out the modem, as I suspected it might happen. Either that, or it was having issues being authenticated to BHN.
I feel much better having BHN Internet instead of AT&T... >.> -- Wanderer of the Stars...
