Hit Control+Alt+Delete and to go "Task Manager" and "End Task" for programs you don't need.
If you haven't managed this before there's probably 10+ programs running in your system tray. You can remove them from your startup processes. Very few of them need to be running at all times.
Skype is a perfect example.
