Rogers London moves Turner Classic, Peachtree to digital

As a legacy analog-only Rogers cable TV customer in London, this is probably going to be what will get me to cancel cable TV (cut the cord).

I just got a letter from Rogers saying that as of Feb 18, they are moving Peachtree TV and Turner Classic Movies off the analog spectrum and onto a digital channel. This is the first move of any cable TV channel(s) of any significance to be cut from the analog CATV spectrum and move to ATSC format here in London (I understand that other cities in Ontario have already been doing this in a major way over the past few years).

My SO watches Turner a lot, so if it was Roger's desire to figure out the fewest channels that they'd have to remove from analog to get the most legacy customers to throw in the towel and migrate themselves to a crappy el-cheapo converter, they've probably hit on a good combination.

I (with my 36" Sony Wega tube tv) refuse to move to digital (with it's agonizingly slow channel-changing functionality). And as it is, I rarely watch TV anymore. So I'll re-connect my outside antenna, get a digital OTA converter box, and I'll at least have CFPL and who knows what else (here in "Radio Free London").

And I doubt that they would move me to a lower-tier ANALOG package that didn't include those two channels (that would require someone to come out and put the required filters on my drop - something that they probably don't do anymore).

I can download the 6:30 NBC evening news broadcast directly from NBC, and my SO can download various sitcoms or watch them on Hulu (she already does a fair bit of that now).

Goodbye Rogers, and good riddance...

If you took your cable and connected it directly to your TV - and told it to do an auto-program (channel search), you'd see that you've been wrong.

And you'd also see some PPV and On-Demand digital channels that are broadcast un-encrypted - so you'd see what porn your neighbors watch (and where they pause, fast-forward and rewind)...

What I hope will happen when I cancel is that Rogers will not disconnect my drop (or they forget to disconnect it). I have some relatives in Windsor that canceled Cogeco cable 4 years ago - and nobody came by to block the drop. They get to see a very interesting mix of analog and unencrypted digital channels, for a very reasonable price...

And save about $70 a month.

well, i suppose they may technically be there, but they don't sell analog cable any longer.

in any event, why not just get a digital adapter??...they are free for Rogers analog customers who move to digital service...as well, they always offer incentives if you are thinking of cancelling...they might be contacting you with such offers anyway, as i sent them your IP and let them know you still have crappy old analog service and were thinking about the new Digital service.

As DJ pointed out Rogers does have a digital adaptor, it should be free (they only give out one). You have to program it to match the IR codes of your TV, call in and have Rogers activate it and by god does it change channels a glacial speeds. The only good thing is the remote has a large mute button which you really need since the CRTC allows unlimited commercial breaks.

It was in Cogeco and Shaw territory about that long ago. Only thing left are about a dozen super basic cable channels.

They sent out a letter a year or so ago about them turning off analog service, however aside from shifting some the channels around to digital there is still an analog signal with channels. A newer tv with a digital tuner will find them all so you don't need their silly adapter.

London is a hole, even FM reception sucks except for FM96, any cheap amplifier can pick it up without any sort of FM circuitry, their signal is too strong.

The OTA solution is great if you're actually in an area that gets more than one channel.

Here in Barrie you can get CTV2 HD OTA and that's it. The channel sucks by the way.

Nope, NNTP, and "warez" is almost peanuts for me.
