New York | HElP - death in the family - any airlines do anything? my grandmother just died in Ukraine...
I am crying ...
I happen to be in India and need to fly ASAP to Ukraine
I never encountered this ... I just want to know if any airlines can do anything to fly me cheaper etc ....
ANY advice / info is very much appreciated ...

From what I see, you need to call the airlines direct to find out what the fares might be. They might not be the lowest prices offered for that flight but they appear to at least discount the higher last minute purchase price. |

Going to be expensive.... TO get a bereavement fare you have to have a death certificate which you do not have.
We have tried to use these fares before - the hoops were impossible.

Bereavement fares are not cheap. The airlines, will, however, do their best to get you where you need to be in a hurry.

And being in a foreign country is worst. The foreign airlines won't help you. Need to find a U.S. airline. You can't fly directly from India to the Ukraine. Have to fly back to the U.S. then to the Ukraine.

You have to call the airline directly, but really the only discount you get on international travel is waiving the 14 day advance purchase charge.
When we went to Mexico for the wife's mom we had to provide information to prove the death, attending doctor's name and hospital. Even then it was $750 for each round trip from Detroit, Michigan to Veracruz, Mexico.

My wife called Delta and was able to get a bereavement discount.
And no one in my family works for an airline.

Call the local airlines, and explain the situation with the booking agent. You may not get the best seats on the plane, but you might be able to get a discount.

Often you'll pay full price up-front, but later after you provide the airline a copy of the death certificate (probably in this case you'll need an original & a translated certified copy), you'll get a refund of some amount. |

The best we could do was 10% rebate after the paper work was sent. That was Aire Lingus. United wouldn't do anything. This was last November.

I think Delta still flies to India. Still need to fly to the U.S. first. A lot has changed since the early 2000s.
If I was in India and needed to get to the Ukraine I would just list as nonrev standby on Emirates,Air France,or Royal Jordanian,etc.. Connect in Dubai.Get there probably within the same day and cost me around $100 or less.
