I've used this visual method for years with DIMMs lacking labelling. Alternately for DDR1 vs. DDR{2,3} you can count pins (for standard "desktop" or "server" RAM (i.e. not SO-DIMM)), DDR has 184 pins while DDR2 and DDR3 has 240 pins.
For things like max speed and timing/SPD settings, no, you can't get those from visual inspection.
