Will a DOCSIS 3.0 fix this?

I notice with my SB5101U which is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem sometimes my downstream and upstream channel will change. Sometimes I will be 297Mhz downstream and upstream will be on channel ID 17 then it will change to something like 309Mhz and the upstream channel ID 18.

The thing is that when it does this it will stop my connection for a few seconds which is annoying when I am streaming music. Since DOCSIS 2.0 only does one channel and 3.0 does channel bonding will it make a difference since the channels are bonded if one changes or go down will it stop the connection for a few seconds or will it be seamless.

Also I do notice a pattern as it will do it around 3 to 4PM EST then be fine for the rest of the night.

Yes a DOCSIS 3 modem should fix that.

The connection drops are due to the channel changes

dynamic channel changes not happening with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem are not 100% certain but it seems that they happen less often and I mean are very rare. I think mine has only changed a handful of times in the last year.

Sounds like when kids get home? Might overcrowd that channel and create a request from the cmts to move you to a uncrowded channel. I would think it would keep you on that less crowded channel, unless you rebooted, and I also thought the channel change would happen without a blip.

my modem is defaulting to downstream 5 (783MHz) and upstream 10 (33MHz)

Sounds like you have 6-8 downstreams and 4 upstreams available moto, is that a d2?

yes I have 6 downstreams and 4 upstreams but no it is not a DOCSIS 2.0 modem I have a SBG6580:

Downstream Bonded Channels
Channel Lock Status Modulation Channel ID Frequency Power SNR Correctables Uncorrectables
1 Locked QAM256 5 807000000 Hz -5.4 dBmV 35.6 dB 4857 449
2 Locked QAM256 1 783000000 Hz -3.4 dBmV 37.5 dB 473 227
3 Locked QAM256 2 789000000 Hz -3.8 dBmV 37.0 dB 654 323
4 Locked QAM256 3 795000000 Hz -4.5 dBmV 36.7 dB 1101 715
5 Locked QAM256 4 801000000 Hz -4.7 dBmV 36.3 dB 1630 507
6 Locked QAM256 6 813000000 Hz -5.4 dBmV 36.6 dB 3163 428
7 Not Locked Unknown 0 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB 0 0
8 Not Locked Unknown 0 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB 0 0

Upstream Bonded Channels
Channel Lock Status US Channel Type Channel ID Symbol Rate Frequency Power
1 Locked TDMA and ATDMA 10 2560 Ksym/sec 33000000 Hz 42.7 dBmV
2 Locked TDMA and ATDMA 9 2560 Ksym/sec 36500000 Hz 42.7 dBmV
3 Locked TDMA and ATDMA 11 2560 Ksym/sec 29500000 Hz 42.7 dBmV
4 Locked TDMA and ATDMA 12 2560 Ksym/sec 24500000 Hz 42.7 dBmV

right now my area does not have 8 downstreams we only have 6 and that is because from 687MHz to 777MHz is SDV QAMs along with 819MHz to 861MHz.

Should be somewhat easy to move SDV freqs.

I'm not sure, but I think the modems make up the channel #s. I do know, regardless of channel or freq. you should have the same traffic flow, or at least within one percent, on all channels. There is no default or primary per say.

actually I believe there is a default channel and most of the traffic is supposed come off of that channel and it spreads the rest of it across the rest of the channels or that the modems are told to go to that channel to send most of that data it is the most open channel and supposedly an x amount of modems are put on each channel.

And no the channel numbers are not set by the modem! They are set by the CMTS and it can vary by CMTS brand Cisco has it to where each individual downstream is numbered so you could have downstreams 64,65,66,67,68,69,70,71 and on an ARRIS CMTS the channels numbers are set by the bonding group so each bonding group has its set of 8 channels max (current generation modems support only 8 and so does the CMTS IOS right now).

Interesting, so your modem being out of order shows some congestion? I'd assume the default would be in order.

So then should I order a SB6141 modem? I only have Earthlink Standard so will it still work? Also if TWC ever drops Earthlink I will have to go to them directly so it would be good to have my own modem.

Also my logs don't show any dynamic channel change.

Just the techs tell me that the 3.0 modems have more noise issues. Is it true?

Is the SB6141 is fully compatable with Earthlink Standard? Techs that came to my house say not.

Thanks. Just ordered it from Amazon. See if it helps.

Also does the SB6141 have noise issues?

noise issues are not caused by the modem model only line conditions

It means the modem was sent a renewal for it's private management address and one of the included lease options was invalid, so that option was ignored.

Probably some option meant for another modem or some non essential option. Nothing service affecting.

Could not find anything on Google. I ordered the black one but should I have gotten the white one? What is the difference between the black and the new white model? Does the new white model have newer chips or is it just the color that is different?
