[Speed] What is up with my ping? Gaming experience lag.

I noticed ever since yesterday that my speed has been jittery. Yesterday I was downloading a file and the speed was averaging 100kb/s last week it would be around 2mb.

I've done multiple ping tests via pingtest.net and this is what it gives me:

»www.pingtest.net/result/ ··· 9630.png

I'm in San Jose, CA and yesterday when I geolocated my previous IP it showed it somewhere in New Jersey.

Here's another ping test but picking a server closes to me which is San Francisco:

What is going on? I've talked to a customer service rep twice. Yesterday they told me to power down/reset. So I did.

I did the whole flushdns, ipconfig /release & /renew

I tried hard wiring it to the modem also switch to router and back again.

I also tried the modem reset button.

I'm not sure what else to do.

Here's a speed test:

Okay, let's start over then..

1) San Jose, CA

2) Experiencing latency issues with my game (Guild Wars 2) and TeamSpeak3. TS3 shows my ping hovering around 600~1000ms. Ping quality is "F" from pingtest.net. I've done multiple tests hard wired to modem and on router. Would still give grade "F" with a ping of 600-1000ms and jitter from 700-900ms.

3) I've been having this ping issue ever since yesterday. I've changed the IP once since my IP yesterday was geolocated somewhere in New Jersey. My IP today says it's located in my city of San Jose.

4) Model Name: SBV5220
Firmware Version: 17.6.7-SCM-05
Vendor Name: Motorola
MTA Firmware name: SBV5220-17.6.7-SCM-05-SHCC
Boot Version: 8.2
Hardware Version: 2
BCMA Software Version: 01.10
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.4
Firmware Build Time: Oct 28 2010 12:59:57

5) Modem is connected to a router. Netgear WGR614v7 with my computer hooked up with a wire. WiFi is only used for Xbox 360.

6) Windows 8 built in firewall.

your modem/EMTA is an end of life device, so i would first recommend calling in and getting that swapped out.

and when you do that tell them you have been having speed issues, and would like them to look at the upstream signal to noise of your modem and the node.

i would suspect some noise popping in causing your issue.

you didnt post signal levels from your modem, which would indicate an obvious problem

It's really fun trying to pull teeth with the mini tweezers in your Swiss Army knife isn't it?

Oh yeah. I deal with this almost daily at work:

customer: it's broken
me: please file a ticket with this info: a, b, c, d, e
customer: ticket filed. (look at ticket, has provided only answer to question a)
me: please provide the other info: b, c, d, e

Rinse, repeat.
