The tibia plateau was crushed. Surgery was recommended to try to restore that as well as possible. The surgeon believed the surgery was necessary for stability.

I don't know if anyone can really see the differences here, but a couple of before and afters, FWIW.

Front (after) 2-15-2013

Lateral (before) 2-1-2013

This front view of both knees probably shows the difference best. Right (injured) knee on your left, of course. Injured part is on the right side of the right knee.

Re: I am so sorry

WOW!!!

You really DID crush everything when you decked out of the back of that moving van!!!

I'm very impressed with the surgical results! Interesting that he ran the two bottom screws all the way through. I would have loved to have watched your surgery; did you, by any chance, get a video of it???

You have enough metal in there to set off the airport alarms for miles around. And that metal is going to stay in there forever. Welcome to the club! You'll be a much better weather forecaster than anyone on TV.

Glad to hear that you get to bend already. I was locked out for at least 3 months after the initial surgeries and I can't remember what angle I was locked at; then I started PT. Couldn't move my knee at all; it was frozen solid. Back to see the surgeon twice a week for extension casts for three more months; they would literally sit on my knee to try and straighten it, and then throw a cast on it while the adhesions were ripping out. NOT fun!!! I'm glad you don't have to go through that.

Re: Photos

That's a big chunk o' tibia broken loose!! No wonder it took a plate & screws to stabilize it!

It's amazing today how they can do these things, and minimise the recovery time.

Oh yes! NICE legs!!

Yes, and see the upper side of the plateau where the bone was crushed out of alignment. Look at the after photo where it had been filled in via bone grafting.

Dunno' about that. He just said it is "fancy." I thought he meant with diamonds and rubies.

Re: I am so sorry

Jo, no casts here. They are using a brace like this.

There are dials on each side which allow one to lock it at any recommended angle. Right now it is at 60 degrees and we get to change it ourselves to 90 in two weeks.

We can open it for dressings and skin care as long as we keep the leg straight and supported. I guess not all hospitals around here are using it yet. The P.A. said I was lucky to be at Overlake. I like that, even though my insurance only covers a semi-private room, I got upgraded to a private one, for slightly more rest than I got the last time I was in.

I wish I could remember what the P.A. told me on Friday. She assisted Dr. Stoll with the surgery. She said, going in, they were expecting to have to remove something which would have made recovery and much harder and longer process. As it turned out, they did not need to do that, whatever it was.

Edit: The "something" was an important ligament, the ACL. After looking that up I am rejoicing it wasn't necessary to "take it out" in order to perform the surgery. It is now easy to understand why the recovery would have been far more difficult even yet. I am thanking my Lord for getting me such a skilled surgeon.

I think you should save it, Russ. Maybe if we hang onto them, we'll never need one again?

The one I linked to looks like mine, just a different brand name. It took us a little while to discover it could be adjusted in length. After removing about six inches in length, it is working much better for me.

I'm with you, on that!!!

Since my accident, I have done a little "soul searching" and I guess I should put away some of my dangerous toys. My reaction time, hand/eye coordination, and speed of recovery after injury, all seem to be............less than they were a few years ago.

Besides, I really appreciate the ability to walk, and sign my name, (with my predominant right hand).

Resistance is futile!

Keep your chin up, that makes it easier to swallow your medicine!!

I advise you to accept help from others. A very famous and very powerful man once asked for help in procuring cold water.

You have my prayers.

Re: I am so sorry

Maybe you could do what the Rain Man did, Russie, drive the bike more slowly and in the driveway. Better yet, in the grass?

As for me, my kiddos have already laid down the law. I will never be allowed to help move anybody again. They forget how old I am, too.

Still, I don't think my accident had to do with age, but rather the tendonitis. My doc calls it "overuse tendonitis." It resulted from my stubborn insistence on continuing repetitive motion which was causing pain. Persistence can be a good character quality, but so is patience.
