Weather Channel is saying that this may be worse than the 1978 blizzard.
Meh, we had a Nor'easter on December 27th, beat all time records. There were very little power outages (mostly remote regions). Though the best part was that we had a half-day at work! A BANK! HALF DAY! WTF?! (Well, the cashiers had to stay, HA!)
I wouldn't get too excited. What cuts power is (are? but then wouldn't it be "what cut power" and not "what cuts power"?) falling trees. Leafless trees don't blow over so easily, just like a boat with its sail down won't keel from wind
Winter is typically a power-outages-less season.
But hey, if you're positively excited, I hope all the best luck to you so that a tree falls on a power line near you! But I will also accuse you of wanting OTHERS to suffer so that you can enjoy your generator
edit - My real tip to you is this: Go fill up on food and movies. You'll be staying home tomorrow!
If we was going to get that kind of weather forecast for here,I would have not bought a air compressor kit and instead buy a Generac 5500 watt generator when I visited my local Lowes this morning....
That was one messed up post. I meant to say that here In WV our power outages are frequent in Winter and slow to repair by our power company(AEP). So if a blizzard type storm were to hit here(I sure as hell hope not),I sure as hell would have gotten that generator.
I gave the generator a good workout earlier, fueled up the snow throwin' beast, and stocked up on bread and milk... so I'm about as prepped as I can be.

WTF mate! Where's the beer, frozen pizza, chips & lubricant?
I really don't think that is enough fuel. Looks to be about 1.5 days worth... right? Don't plan on getting any out of a vehicle without a great amount of trouble. They all have anti-siphon blocks in the fill tubes now.
The videos are nice - the quality is fine. Ask her to please go outside and get a few minutes worth this time. I grew up in Westport, so I know what's headed your way. This storm is going to be a great test for your machine.

Unfortunately... I'll take what I can get for videography services... and that may very well end up being from the inside looking out.
Given the circumstances, I may end up having to go 1st person driver or set it on a stationary object and just get the widest view possible. I'll do my best. And yes, we're about to find out what my Rider's capabilities really are. It's been a beast thus far... I have high hopes.

What cuts power in the winter (at least in this area) isn't falling trees, its falling limbs. No wind needed. Wet, heavy snow accumulates on limbs and brings them down and with them power lines. There have even been instances in this area where power lines where brought down only by the ice that built up on them alone, no trees needed. Of course, it all depends on the type of snowfall and the ambient temps.

Depends on the load. But I'd prep for a 2 week outage - here, when ice comes, we'll see 1-2 weeks w/o power.
My 8kw generator drinks 6.5 gallons just managing the fridge, blower on the furnace and TV in about 16 hours.
