[VA] Modem upgrade?

I have a old DOCSIS 2 modem and would like to upgrade it to DOCSIS 3 modem. Does anyone know if Cox offer free upgrade or how much it cost?

No on the free upgrade.

As for cost they should be $80.00 from Cox.

Or:

Just make sure to Future proof yourself and get a modem that does 8 downstreams.

Howdy Anonguy!

Could you or anyone help with the difference between that one and the SB6180 ?
That is what we tested when they came out recently. It definitely made a difference from our SB5120.
I think it was $89 from them direct. But their site had a notice you could swap for FREE.

There are so many models in the 6xxx series. Is there anywhere we can see decent comparisons?

Or would their Netgear Gateway be better @ $129?

Thanks!

Howdy,

The main difference is the chipset they use.

Also the 6180 is only available from Cox.

here is a discussion:

»[OK] 6141 vs 6180 - Ever determine which was better?

And it seems to be a consensus that a seperate modem and router is always better than a all in one unit.

Thanks! Sorry, I should have looked harder. Just finished troubleshooting some weirdness and I guess I was too burned out
The more I look into it, the more confusing that decision [which modem] becomes.

I totally agree - this has been my experience as well.

Thanks again!

I got a Cisco DPC3010 off ebay for $35.00. It's an 8x4 D3 modem and there are a bunch of refurbished for cheap on ebay.

Hmm, by refurbished do you mean wiped down with a moist cloth?

Im not a fan of 2nd hand modems. Seen friends with too many firmware issues..or if it's from the same ISP and still on someone else's account, your out of luck. Just a friendly warning.

Don't know, but mine works fine. As long as you buy from someone with a good feedback rating there should be no problems.

True. Just saying caution should be taken.

Oh, and try to make sure your signal levels are up to par. Alot of times signal issues can be present that D2 does't have a problem with, while D3 does. Just FYI in you see anything crop up.

We've been reading where if you purchase your own SB6141 (even brand new retail package - like the white one)
we wouldn't be able to get a fw (firmware) update from ISP.

Can anyone confirm this would be the case with Cox?

We wanted to opt for the 6141 retail white, because we read that all the black ones sold are actually used
or already had been provisioned by an ISP.

I tend to believe that may be the case, as we even see the 6180 for sale on amazon.
Surely that would have to be used or already provisioned?

Thanks for any info on that.

you can get the black 6141 new on amazon I paid $89 for mine, the 6180 is sold new by ISP only so the ones on like amazon are used , as for the firmware as long as its a supported model it should update during the maintenance window if it does not then you can pm one of the techs here to update it. also there is no difference between the black or white version

link for new 6141 on amazon

Thanks for the response!

Wondering if you've read this info?:
»www.amazon.com/review/R2 ··· 07IMPMW4

Usually i take reviews with a 'grain of salt', but 118 comments and the subject matter of this is very interesting.

It appears that only the white retail has year warranty?
I did plan to see if they can provide one of these at their store tomorrow.
I was hoping to get a formal answer from them on this forum first.

I don't think he was paying attention who he was getting it from as mine was completely sealed never opened and here locally you can by the black one at best buy brand new. also if you note that person said only the black ones are sold by ISP which we know is not true as with other current modems sb 5101,6120,6121 and 6580 are all black and can be bought from any electronic store just about.

also if you notice a lot of those post are from people with time warner cable which has been trying to force its customer to rent modems

and flapping can be caused by a number of thing being modem failure, reinsertions, hits and misses, and power adjustments with in the signal

Thanks m8trix for the intel.

Yes, we thought something was not quite right with that.
Our SB5120 was black and brand spanking new.

Purchased the white 6141 (retail from BBuy).
Long story short, seems to be a huge upgrade in speed both ways. Provision was very simple and easy.

Download is not quite as fast as what they claimed they upgraded the speed to, but i read where it may take some time to fully implement?
But it's rockin and a whole lot faster than the 5120. We'll see how consistent it will be.

Not sure about fw... but i always feel that if it isn't broke we don't need to fix it.
FW is presently SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.8-SCM01-NOSH

Thanks everyone for all the info!
