Visitors to such sites as CNN, the Gawker network, and NBC News were instantly transferred to a Facebook error page upon loading the intended site.

The only way to stop it was to log out of Facebook. This shows how widespread Facebook Connect is and how easily one site can cause the Internet to come screeching to a halt.
These guys are not ready for prime time, and they don't care. Another reason for users to use common sense and not rely on others with their automatic solutions.
As Facebook's computer system redirects all the world's sites to itself, an ominous message appears on its main control screen: "WARN: THERE IS ANOTHER SYSTEM", followed by its audible demand for operators to give it direct connection to "Google".
(My apologies to Dennis Feltham Jones and Colossus... especially to Colossus)
At which point, the computer megasystem will state to mankind: "Freedom is just an illusion... in time, you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love".
With further apologies to Colossus... it's just a joke, Colossus... only a joke...
Reminds me of a comedy skit I saw in the late 70's. A vending machine size computer was saying it was invincible and was going to take over the world etc. A drunk (complete with paper bag & bottle) staggers up and listens for a bit before going behind the computer and pulling the cord at which point he staggers off with a smug expression.

It has always been a good policy security-wise to log out of a site. There are a few like dslr I don't bother to...others like google mail, facebook etc. I would NEVER stay logged into.
