Teksavvy to Start

Ugh what a nightmare, its not Starts fault though

So the 6th was my disconnect, Teksavvy went down on the morning of the 7th and now I still do not have internet

Called in today and apparently Rogers thinks this is now a new install and had my address wrong (install is scheduled for Sunday??) Start is going to try and get them to fix the address

Rocca anything you can do? Anyway you can escalate to Rogers? The line is active I am syncing up just not provisioned.

And now begins day 4 of no internet

Man I hate Rogers, they do anything in their power to screw with iISP's

No updates from Rogers, but they did cancel my new install appointment to install the line thats already active lol

Looks like Rogers has finally confirmed they will transfer me on Tuesday

So that would be the 6th day of no Internet

Just a warning for those guys coming over from Teksaavy I highly recommend renting a modem and doing it that way until everything gets moved over and then you can use your modem.

How is that a horror story? Sorry but that's not a horror story!!

If you want to switch, rent your modem for 1 month from Start, if you want to ensure proper transfer. If you don't do that then you are asking for some down time.

Or just do it as a new install.

Yes I agree its not a horror story, and its definitely not Start's fault. I wouldn't let this deter you, that was not my intention of this post. Just a warning for those coming over to do the rental way

My switch is tomorrow. I'm coming from Teksavvy too. I don't mind bitching for 8 hours straight to get it done in a day. We shall see.

Hope that isn't directed at us? We're on your side and will do what we can if something goes sideways, but we do have limitations on what we can do.

All the issues are because of the limitations and that is the biggest drawback for IISPs'. Correct me if I'm wrong!

There are two issues, the first is that Rogers won't issue a transfer until it "sees" the disconnect from the old ISP - this is something the CRTC ruled on already with allowing the gaining ISP to cancel on behalf of the customer however it sits in design phase with CISC. Once that's done many of the issues including Rogers customers having to cancel with retail first will also go away. The second issue is that a modem can only be tied to one account at any given time. Since transfers require 10 business days and require active service, there is much work that we go through to minimize the impact, but as many have mentioned - use a rental for the first month, makes life go a lot smoother, only costs $5 plus the cost of returning the modem.

+ the time is takes to package it back up, drive to the post office, and ship it back out! I'm sure you know Rocca, time isn't free

It's a risk, possibly lose your internet for 24-48 hours or pay a little extra for a rental + the time that involves...

I am not clear on how this rental transfer works can you explain that or confirm it as follows...

I call TSI to cancel get a date 10 business days, make sure to get my Roger confirmation # etc.

I call Start say I am transferring but want to rent?

Start sends me the modem

Cancel day - TSI ends, Start begins - tell me how this is going to be better with a rental - the 2 modem serials allow for less possible issues?

Now how do I get my TSI modem onto my Start account - don't I now have to deal with another transfer day and yet another possible time where Rogers will be like "oops sorry don't care but our bad"

Yes, call your current provider to cancel

Call us, let us know you want to transfer and need a rental modem

Yes, we will send you the modem

Transfer day, plug our modem in. To switch to the modem you currently own we would wait a few weeks to ensure it is unprovisioned by your old provider and Red then we would place a modem swap. Once the swap is confirmed you just need to plug your modem in. A modem can only be provisioned with one account at a time so it can take a day or so to get the modem off your canceled account and changed to us which is why some people chose to rent a modem for a short period so they aren't risking any down time.

That's the main thing.

The same modem cannot be active on 2 Indie ISPs at the same time, so a 2nd modem gets around that.

Likely your modem from START will be registered on the incumbent's system before you even receive it.

It may even be useful to do this when one of the ISPs is the incumbent, such as Rogers or Cogeco - or not.

I did it when I came over from Cogeco and I could swap modems back and forth for a couple of days to compare.

But I was one of the early STARTers, so we were also being even more careful at that time.

Thanks for all that info. For me at least paying a few dollars for the rental just to have the peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong im not stranded is more than worth it.

My transfer date was yesterday. My Teksavvy went out at about 6am. 5pm rolled around and I still didn't have internet. I called start and they said they were still waiting on Rogers to provision my modem. I knew that there would likely be an outage period since I was using the same modem. This morning I got an e-mail at 9am sharp saying that my service would be activated today. I decided to reboot my modem and voila, internet works. Roughly 24 hours from Teksavvy to Start using the same modem.

I'm seeing 3 up instead of 4 so I'll have to notify them of that when they call to confirm the service is up.

Welcome aboard. If you're seeing 3 up, that's often QoS in your router. Can you make sure it's not set to auto, and/or disable it for testing (or test direct to modem without the router). Thanks.

I disabled the QoS engine and I'm able to hit close to 4 now:

my experience and that of others from reading the forums is that when moving from a TPIA to another, the cut off happens the next day usually early in the morning and you'll be without connectivity for usually 24 hours where service comes up the next day.

How long should I wait before I call?
My teksavvy connection ended sometime in the wee hours yesterday morning, and so far has not come back with start (36 hours or so now). I'm starting to get a little nervous, because I don't want to go the whole weekend without internet.

Back again from my mobile. Cannot believe this isn't a main isp forum yet. Anyways..

In mid January I booked to have my isp moved to start. I properly notified Teksavvy. I gave all my information for my modem and billing over the phone, had her repeat the information. A day later I get a call saying "the modem doesn't exist, can you take a picture"? So I took a picture of the information label on the bottom and emailed it. Great. No more problems now right? WRONG MOTHER$^#%^ER

Got disconnected on the 13th at midnight. Called start twice since. First guy said "wait 24 hours". Ok 24 hours later still no go. Second guy said "dunno what happened, but you were scheduled to change on the 31st of January for some reason". Even though I made it very clear it was to be on the 13th of February. "Whatever" I told myself, knowing people have had it worse. The start employee said "24 hours but you should be up by today".

I have the feeling Rogers might not be entirely at fault for the delays.

Another pornless and boring night, thx.

All fixed. Why is start DNS hi-jacking thepiratebay.se and redirecting to the rogers main page?

I will be running Namebench to see what other links are hijacked.
