Verizon lets you backdate plan increases to the beginning of your current billing cycle. I'd drop it to 4GB and make a phone call if you wind up going over in a particular month.
There is no reason to pay an overage on any Verizon plan, voice or data, if you are proactive enough to monitor your usage. They've allowed this type of backdating for more than a decade.
