Pushing a foot of Snow in Toronto... that's a fair bit. Plow came through took me an hour to clear the mess it left behind. |

Well this was a pretty big storm, biggest single event probably going back to the 2008 winter which was pretty bad.
Was fun! |

It was 40cm, but over the course of two days instead of 16 hours like this storm was. Problem with 1999 was that after a brief reprieve it continued to snow for a week and a half after and Toronto ended up with 117cm when all was said and done. The army didn't get called in after a meter of snow had fallen. |

What or where is "St. Catharines - south"? Thorold? I was in the area last Saturday when that squall band inched its way up from Lake Erie. On returning home, as soon as I exited the 406 to the QEW the sun was shining. Snow stopped around here about an hour ago. Wind is still blowing it around a bit. Our street has been plowed thrice but only on the side of the road opposite me. WTF? Had to dig out the side of the house as a snow drift had formed just below the air intake for the furnace (which is 3' off the ground). Glad I shoveled it out when I did. Also had to take a broom to the Shaw Direct dish as it was partially buried. |

Air intake for air exchangers is also germane. The exhaust vent is warmish air so never a problem. |

On returning home, as soon as I exited the 406 to the QEW the sun was shining. It's either going to be St. Catharines just on top of the escarpment before you enter Thorold (like Barbican Heights or where Brock is), or the south-end lower part of the city like Merritton or Marsdale. My guess is that it's either Brock or the Power Glen Generating Station, as there's official EC observation stations at both locations and the 37cm measurement is official. The south-end always gets more snow than the north due to the dynamic that the escarpment causes. Sometimes the difference can be as big as 45cm in the south-end and only 20cm in the north. That has happened on more occasions than I can count, particularly when there's a band that comes in off Lake Ontario. That squall band from last Saturday coming in off Lake Erie was impressive. It dumped nearly a foot of snow on Fort Erie in the short period it was over the town from about 5AM until 11. I was monitoring it on my phone in Newark and was expecting our flight to be delayed but it wasn't. We landed in Buffalo *just* as the squall band had moved northward (in fact, flying in I could see the white wall of the squall over the north-end of the town) and watching the snow removal and deicing crews right on the tarmac at the airport was outright impressive. Those guys know how to move and remove snow! |
