Media Player Classic having trouble

Recently my Media Player Classic stopped playing the *.rm files properly.

The file association is not the problem, as the files WILL open.
They just do not play anymore.

And the right-click context menu is still available for MPC.

I downloaded the latest codec pack, but that did not fix the problem.

Has anyone else had trouble with MPC?

MPC doesn't actually support RM files. I believe it uses the Real Alternative plugin.

MPC-HC plays rm files and always has. Trade the old MPC in for the new one.

Yup. Tried that too.
No luck. How strange!

Are the .rm files you are trying to play the full file, or a link to a streaming file hosted on the web? If the remote file has been removed/renamed etc., MPC will not be able to find it.

Good point. You can tell by the file size. The rm links are basically just text files, thus really small.

Also, do you know for sure the files are good? For testing you could simply install RealPlayer.

These are good points. You may be referring to ram files, which just point to rm files. You can open a ram file with notepad and see the address to download the corresponding rm file. MPC-HC will not play ram files, but VLC will. I can assure you that MPC-HC will play rm files without real player being installed. I do it all the time.

Some of the Real Media streaming link files I've had were extension .ram and extension .rm. They usually come in under 100k in size.

MPC will play them both, though I needed Real Alternative to do so.
