[NCAA-F] Paterno family; ex Gov; FBI experts dispute Freeh Repor

The Paterno family and a slate of experts dispute the Freeh Report:
»www.paterno.com/Overview ··· ult.aspx

Story: »www.usatoday.com/story/n ··· 1906257/
»espn.go.com/new-york/sto ··· -failure

The Freeh Report was commissioned by(and paid for) and designed to whitewash the Penn State Board of Trustees. To that end it distorted the truth enough to make those who paid for the report happy.

The Paterno Family Report was commissioned by(and paid for) the Paterno Family to put Coach Paterno in the best light. To that end it distorts the truth enough to satisfy the family.

The truth no doubt resides somewhere in between these 2 extremes.

Strictly speculation that Freeh and his staff had an agenda. Indeed most intelligent people who have read the report as well as the background of the investigation don't believe that it was engineered for anyone.

On the other hand, we can clearly see what the Paterno family is trying to achieve.

I consider myself intelligent enough to see that the Freeh Report did have an agenda and it was to make sure that the Penn State Trustees went unscathed in any coverup implications. I never believed for 1 sec that the trustees weren't involved in the coverup. They got what they paid for as all such reports are tailored to those who paid for them.

What needs to be said here is that Freeh was commissioned by Penn State to investigate what Penn State did, including what they did wrong.

The Paterno family commissioned themselves to embellish the image of Joe Paterno.

The respective reports speak for themselves. They are their own best evidence.

IMO based upon the reports and the significant amount of detail brought up publicly prior to those reports plus the evidence introduced at trial convince me that:

Paterno specifically was held accountable to a level and degree that he should not have been and some of the things attributed to him were either unfair or inaccurate.

Additionally the punishment imposed by the NCAA on the Penn State were way to severe when one considers the nexus between Paterno, the FB program, Sandusky and Sandusky's molestations.

In a limited or narrow and selective manner this was an example of a classic, "Search for the guilty and punishment of the innocent."

In other words the distribution of the punishment to fit the individual crimes were also inappropriate. Some folks got the appropriate punishment, some got less than they deserved, some got just the right amount, and some like Paterno got too much as did the football program and all of the hundreds of people especially students and players associated with it that were completely innocent.

1. What post or named person in this thread is the Penn State Alumni to whom you refer?

2. You're statement implies that all alumni of Penn State would agree on the facts of the incident and the actions and responsibilities of the people. You're not really saying that are you?

A Penn State trustee want Freeh Report re-examined for errors:
»www.foxnews.com/us/2013/ ··· +Text%29

The critique released this weekend by Joe Paterno's family raised "serious and troubling" questions about Freeh's findings, trustee Alvin Clemens said Monday in a statement.

said Clemens, a trustee since 1995. "In addition to questions about accuracy and fairness, there is little question that the Freeh report is less than complete."

Freeh's report has never been formally discussed by the board as a whole.

As detailed in my report, the emails and contemporary documents from 2001 show that, despite Mr. Paterno’s knowledge and McQueary’s observations, four of the most powerful officials at Penn State agreed not to report Sandusky’s activity to public officials,” Freeh said in a statement issued through his website,
Hard to not see what went on no matter how the Paterno family wants to spin it. My statement wasnt directed at anyone it was just to point out only penn state alumni would even try to defend anything about it. Personally i hope everyone that knew about it and did nothing rots in hell.

You're so far off base. You quote Freeh's unsubstantiated and partial info quotes that have since been thoroughly and specifically rebutted regarding what Paterno did, when he did it, and what he didn't do, most of which Freeh got wrong as as been directly corrected.

You are out of touch.

Mcqueary went to Joe Paterno back in 2001 thats not contested and really never has been. That one sentence and fact is enough in my book.

Having gown up 20 mins from the campus and a PSU fan I personally feel that the university didn't get the right amount of punishment. For what those 4 men tried to cover up in order to protect the football program they should have got the death penalty and been shut down for a year at least. What they did makes the University of Miami look like a Boy Scout camp by comparison.

Greg Couch, FoxSports.com: “Joe Paterno isn’t going to walk on a technicality. He can’t get off on reasonable doubt. It doesn’t matter if he wasn’t given due process. This isn’t the TV show ‘Law & Order’, and Paterno isn’t a perp. He was never charged with a crime or taken to court in the first place. So the Paterno family commissioned its attorney to find loopholes in the Freeh Report, issue its own report and start rebuilding Paterno’s name. Paterno’s widow Sue and son Jay were on the interview circuit Monday, on CNN, ESPN, Katie Couric. It’s desperate and kind of sad, really. And it has zero chance of working. This is the court of public opinion. No one is swayed by a lawyer saying there is no proof that when Penn State officials said they told 'Coach’ about Jerry Sandusky in 1998, they meant Coach Joe Paterno. They weren’t talking about the women’s diving coach. But can you prove that? Beyond a shadow of a doubt? This was a bad play by the Paterno family, but maybe the only one. The truth is that their report didn’t come up with much. But they had to go out and sell it to Katie Couric, anyway.”

The world renowned International Law Firm of King & Spaulding was employed to investigate the case of the controversy surrounding Joe Paterno in the context of the Sandusky and Penn State sexual abuse scandal.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ki ··· Spalding

IMPO the quality of the investigation and especially the subsequent report are extraordinarily well written. The full written report, its subsections and summaries are some of the finest of its kind I’ve seen. In my 40 years of professional experience I've read tens of thousands such type of reports and presentations too.

Here is a couple of opening paragraphs from the summary for the media:
quote:
Former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and a team of other high-level experts have found that the Freeh report commissioned by the Penn State University Board of Trustees in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal is factually wrong, speculative and “fundamentally flawed.”

In a comprehensive analysis released today [Feb. 10, 2013], Thornburgh and former top FBI profiler Jim Clemente, prominent Washington Attorney Wick Sollers and the director of The Johns Hopkins Sexual Behaviors Consultation Unit, Dr. Fred Berlin, conclude that the Freeh report was a failure that does not meet the basic requirements of a thorough, objective and fair investigation.

Based on a review of all available evidence, including discussions with attorneys representing Curley, Schultz and Spanier, the experts conclude that the late Penn State Coach Joe Paterno did not attempt to hide any information or hinder or impede any investigation related to the crimes or conduct of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Media Release: »www.paterno.com/Media-Re ··· 6gui9GK4

Then there is a larger more detailed but still clearly written and sourced “Overview.”

Overview: »www.paterno.com/Overview ··· 9P-i9GK4

Finally at the website attached to the above two links is a list of the bios of the investigators and contributors to the report. Their credentials and experience is impeccable.

The website format is exceptionally well laid out and easily understood and easy to navigate: www.paterno.com

Lastly on the web site there is link to the PDF full report that is well over two hundred pages.

It would be refreshing to see from those that disagree with the findings of the investigation, evidence and analysis provided by the King & Spaulding report that they offer up a direct rebuttal of the presentation complete with their rebuttal facts, evidence, and expert opinion. And make that a rebuttal of substance and not a cherry picked miniscule partial response!

We all are free to disagree with any and all parts of the report as well as have our own opinion as to the complicity if any of Paterno. However, in light of the above the standard response from the dissenting posters seems to be generally:

“Joe Paterno is guilty as hell and should rot in hell. He’s guilty because I say so.”

The only people that will be convinced by that stand-alone argument are the Kool-Aid drinkers and witch hunters or the members of the "mob." People that have no interest in the difference between evidence and spin.

The world is convinced that Paterno was a skunk. His statue got pulled down and people that loved him are embarassed that they got fooled. No amount of spin from experts and lawyers hired by Paterno's widow will change that, even if they are 100% correct.

Sandusky was allowed to continue molesting kids, his actions swept under the rug by powerful people "for the good of the program". Joe Paterno was the most powerful person at the university. Even if he really did have no knowledge and nothing to do with the coverup, no one will ever believe it.

What is highly debateable is what exactly did he say to Paterno, his father, Dranov, Curley and Schultz. Five people heard the story. One is a Doctor and a mandated reporter. He did not report anything. McQueary admitted giving Paterno a watered down report of what he witnessed.

Despite that, Paterno did report the informationas he should. He admitted he diod not know how to handle the situation. People who cover-up things do not tell others.

Ever hear of Richard Jewell? Yeah, the allegations against him were pretty 'reasonable to conclude' as well, weren't they? OH, and didn't the FIFA group enjoy Louie Freeh's Ethics Investigation report? Yep, So much so that they deep-sixed it.

The clearest evidence of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's understanding of a child-sex abuse allegation against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky does not appear anywhere in the 238-page report released Sunday by a panel of experts enlisted in his family's burgeoning campaign to restore his legacy.

The inclusion of Paterno's admission to a grand jury in January 2011 that he understood a witness had seen Sandusky engaging in activity of a "sexual nature" with a young boy would have run counter to the experts' portrayal of Paterno as a naïve grandfather who had little understanding of sexual abuse between men and boys.

In its place, a former FBI profiler hired by the Paterno team offered an analysis that excused the former coach's lack of immediate action as the byproduct of a preconceived notion of Sandusky's character and poor communication from the witness, former graduate assistant Mike McQueary.

"watered down"? According to the Paterno hired gun mouthpiece, maybe.
