Pope Benedict XVI to resign

The Pope is resigning on February 28th. He'll be the first Pope to do so in 598 years. He's saying it's due to his health deteriorating quickly.

I'm kind of shocked at this. I thought that they were expected to hold the office until they died?

I'm only speculating here, but perhaps he is dealing with a degenerative disease like Alzheimers that would make it impossible for him to carry out his duties.

In this day and age that would be a difficult thing to conceal as they might have in the past.

At any rate, let's hope they pick someone with more modern and progressive views this time than they usually do.

Hah, I heard something about this when I was half-sleeping this morning and thought it was a dream.

Health would be one reason, a wide-open blowout on the mishandling of all the sex abuse scandals would be another.

While it may come as a shock to you, there are a lot of Catholics in Canada.

Last I checked, there were a number of members of the Church of Rome in Canada, so the news and the subsequent election of a new Bishop of Rome will affect them.

I'm impressed that Pope Benedict came to this conclusion and acted on it without any sort of leak, trial balloon, or anything else like that. He's doing what he things is right for the Church, and I can respect that.

The CBC lists a couple of big names there as successors.

Jean-Claude Turcotte: Anti-abortion (except in some cases). Anti-women joining the priesthood.

Marc Ouellet: Anti-abortion in all cases, including rape.

Thomas Christopher Collins: I don't see much on this person.

In this day and age, I hope they strike the first two off the list.

Three Canadians as potential successors? Well, we obviously know it will never be a Canadian now.

(mind you, this isn't the first time I've seen Turcotte's name floated around)

It was Oulette.

Collins would be highly, highly unlikely.

I saw that on the elevator TV, and had to check to make sure it wasn't April 1.

I'm surprised to say the least.

I was somewhat surprised when he was elected Pope in the first place, because he was in his late 70's at the time, and didn't look all that healthy even then.

Caretaker Pope. Often after a long serving Pope they elect one who is expected to not do much or be Pope for that long.

I'm Canadian and I'm Roman Catholic...

It's ironic the legacy of the Roman Empire some what lives on in the Roman Catholic Church...

Re: Pope Benedict XVI to resign

You don't have to like the Catholic Church to understand that it's still an important, if declining, social and political force. That's why the selection of the next Pope is important and relevant. Hopefully someone more progressive than Benedict, whose hard-line conservatism was a setback to women and gay rights.

I think the election of a younger Pope might help, in that regard but the chances of that happening is remote.
The Vatican, IMO, is run like a political party. No matter how progressive the Pope might be certain laws will be difficult, if not impossible, to pass. He will meet much resistance from the traditionalists.
Any prospective candidate possessing those qualities will not be elected.
Opposition to gays and gay marriage is entrenched in the Bible (Church's views, not mine), women priests, birth control etc have been preached for years. The Church will have to do a 360 degree turn to change.

He has been on the top or the second person on every list from every news organization I have seen, not just Canadian ones. That tends to lend some credibility to just how serious of a contender he seems to be to the world as a whole.
