| Pope Benedict XVI to resign The Pope is resigning on February 28th. He'll be the first Pope to do so in 598 years. He's saying it's due to his health deteriorating quickly.
I'm kind of shocked at this. I thought that they were expected to hold the office until they died?

 | I'm only speculating here, but perhaps he is dealing with a degenerative disease like Alzheimers that would make it impossible for him to carry out his duties.
In this day and age that would be a difficult thing to conceal as they might have in the past.
At any rate, let's hope they pick someone with more modern and progressive views this time than they usually do. |

Health would be one reason, a wide-open blowout on the mishandling of all the sex abuse scandals would be another. |

| While it may come as a shock to you, there are a lot of Catholics in Canada. |

I'm impressed that Pope Benedict came to this conclusion and acted on it without any sort of leak, trial balloon, or anything else like that. He's doing what he things is right for the Church, and I can respect that. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |

hm @videotron.ca | reply to TLS2000 The CBC lists a couple of big names there as successors.
Jean-Claude Turcotte: Anti-abortion (except in some cases). Anti-women joining the priesthood.
Marc Ouellet: Anti-abortion in all cases, including rape.
Thomas Christopher Collins: I don't see much on this person.
In this day and age, I hope they strike the first two off the list. |

(mind you, this isn't the first time I've seen Turcotte's name floated around) |

Collins would be highly, highly unlikely. |

I think the election of a younger Pope might help, in that regard but the chances of that happening is remote. The Vatican, IMO, is run like a political party. No matter how progressive the Pope might be certain laws will be difficult, if not impossible, to pass. He will meet much resistance from the traditionalists. Any prospective candidate possessing those qualities will not be elected. Opposition to gays and gay marriage is entrenched in the Bible (Church's views, not mine), women priests, birth control etc have been preached for years. The Church will have to do a 360 degree turn to change. -- Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
