 SentinelPremium join:2001-02-07 Florida kudos:1 | How to go to .com instead of .co.uk? This is a question having to do with being able to bring up USA .com websites while using the internet in other countries such as the UK. I had no idea what forum would be the best for this question because I did not know if this is a security issue or a website issue or a web page coding issue or a network issue (webhosting? security? webmasters?) so I thought I would put it in here and if the mods could think of a better fit for it then by all means please move it. Thank you
Problem: Let's say you are an American and you are temporarily in the UK, and you are online. You want to go to an American .com address but every time you type it in you are redirected to the duplicate .co.uk version of the page instead. Such as amazon.co.uk instead of amazon.com. Fine and helpful if that is what you want, but if you actually want to see the American version of the site you can't.
1. Is there a way to force direction to the USA version rather than the UK version? 2. Is this forbidden or illegal or something for some reason I can't see? 3. If there is a way to do it, is it dangerous in anyway? IN other words does it require some kind of dubious software that in itself could be hacked and render you vulnerable?
I've got to think that there must be some way around this but I can't think of it, but I'm sure if it can be done someone in here knows how and if it can't then hopefully someone can explain to me why not. |

| I had similar problems in France. I wanted to go to the Disney site, but it saw I was in France and insisted on only letting me get to the French-language site. It was a problem because I couldn't read French. I guess Disney didn't consider that English-speaking tourists in France might want to visit Euro Disney.
Anyway, I think the answer to your problem lies in using a VPN to the US. I don't know how to set that up, but I'm sure someone else will help. |

| reply to Sentinel DNS is making assumptions based on your IP address.
You could use a proxy. That way it looks like you are in whatever region the proxy is in.
If you have a way to set up a VPN that will have the same effect.
Not familiar with worldwide legality but there are a host of obnoxious laws about using the Internet to make phone calls bypassing the legacy phone companies and of course the copyright police will not be pleased if you are able to access stuff not authorized in your region.
As an individual doing this on your own I doubt you have much to worry about.

| reply to Sentinel Many sites will let you choose your country..it might be a pain, but.
goto www.amazon.com
amazon.com (takes you to)---> amazon.co.uk choose US (takes you to) ---> amazon.com

The proxy looks like best possible solution. I'll look into that some more. |
