Help Needed - Strange sound problem

For the past week or so, I have had trouble getting sound to play from internet streaming sources, such as YouTube videos. Note that this is not a Flash plugin issue, as I do not have Flash Player installed on my system and use other facilities to play Flash videos, i.e., vlc. Sound will not play for Flash videos via vlc nor for HTML5 videos in the browser (Iceweasel 18.0.2) or in vlc.

However, sound itself does play on my system. I can play .wav files with aplay and I can play audio CD's with vlc.

A few days ago, I added my userid to the audio group. Immediately after doing that and logging out and logging back in, I was able to play sound with HTML5 videos in the browser and vlc, and with Flash videos in vlc, However, a while later, my system was back to not playing those sounds. My user id is still in the audio group. Note: To the best of my knowledge, my user was never in that group before, when sound was working. Also, according to the Arch wiki, a user need not be in that group just to play sound.

Since sound in general does work, I have no idea how to troubleshoot this problem. All the help I can find has to do with either no sound at all or no sound in Flash.

My OS is Siduction (Debian) Linux 64-bit with Linux 3.7.6. I will be happy to provide any further info that could help find a solution.

What happens if you fire up the application with root access?

Do you still have a sound issue?

My solution may be a bit dated, but I've always had a bitch of a time with pulseaudio.

I've had good results in the past uninstalling it and using only alsa as my audio driver.

Otherwise if you really want to hang onto pulse you could try downloading the accompanying mixer and config utilities which are usually not included and make certain that all your streams are enabled and sources and sinks connected.

Again I dunno if your version also uses phonon as a layer as well or JACK audio connection kit. Since I do a lot of MIDI work I have JACK audio installed but I used a special media distribution called KXStudio to install that and so far my audio has simply just worked.

Anyway, there's a lot to google and a lot to try to track down audio problems and I've given you a few directions in which to look here.

Sorry I can't be more specific without knowing exactly which drivers and audio layers you have installed.

@lugnut, I do not believe I have PulseAudio on my system either, but I am checking...

@Archivis, I will check that, too.

All of a sudden, the sound is playing in vlc again. Still not in the browser (for HTML5). This is under the normal userid.

This is just nutty!

One more thing if you're using phonon in your system.

Go to the system settings app, select multimedia, and make sure you have the right device settings for your hardware and apps and see if you have a choice of backends between vlc and gstreamer try switching between the two to see if it helps.

Also be advised that this sort of intermittent problem can be the sort of thing that fixes itself after a couple of updates.

I have verified that PulseAudio is not installed. Nor is Phonon. I am pretty sure that I am only using ALSA.

Thanks for your suggestions, @lugnut. At least they are helping me narrow things down.

What kind of multimedia settings do you have available to you under the system settings application? You may be able to tweak a few settings from the GUI.

Could be an issue with software mixing and you'd benefit from a card that supports native hardware mixing like an emu10k1.

I don't see anything like that in either Sound and Video, Preferences or System Tools. I'm just running a vanilla LXDE desktop.

It's just an on board sound chip. Card: HDA Intel PCH. Chipset: Realtek ALC889
