Shaw getting into IPTV?Over at the shaw careers sections, it appears there are postings for what looks like IPTV positions or a new ip video delivery network...?
Noticed one for a systems architect and manager. Interesting move if that is the way they are going. May open up some doors to finally get more HD channels. Anyone see those postings? Hopefully they haven't removed it after this post. |

Most Cable MSOs will likely eventually move towards an IPTV delivery system. However, don't expect it to be anytime soon. It's likely they're looking to hire someone to develop a long term transition strategy to help them transition to IP. Another more likely scenario is they're looking for someone to help them develop TV anywhere apps. |

Probably for the video backbone, which is most likely all IP |

Looks like that is what it is according to what is mentioned in the Q2 results "We plan to invest up to $500 million of these net proceeds back into our core business over fiscal 2013, 2014 and 2015 accelerating our investment in certain strategic capital initiatives. Key investments to be accelerated include the completion of our Calgary data centre, further digitization of our network and additional bandwidth upgrades, development of IP delivery of video, expansion of our WiFi network, and additional innovative product offerings related to Shaw Go and other applications to provide an enhanced customer experience." » www.shaw.ca/uploadedFile ··· 2013.pdf |

Hopefully.
IPTV is the future. Streaming 300+ channels of crap poorly encoded simultaneously is highly inefficient.
There are still some hiccups in the way most companies are deploying IPTV. It's not fair to judge the core technologies on those things, though.
One example is that most current IPTV providers now (Telus, Verizon FIOS) use MOCA bridges once they hit the customer premises to deploy IP locally. This can work great in some houses but in most you're going to get less than stellar results.
Eventually all of the technologies will find level.. Ideally every home would have a wired gigabit port in every location where you place technology. |

Yup, I was wrong... IPTV is being worked on by Shaw! Maybe I'll hold off on buying the gateway for the eventual IPTV boxes. |

I think gateway is still a good investment even for the future. The gateway itself is a hybrid box as stated here: » www.arrisi.com/solutions ··· ndex.aspThat means it can be used in traditional cable RF plants and IP architectures. I would hope that that the gateway will be used in this intiative too. It would make sense, especially if they have a large deployment of gateway boxes in the field, to eventually migrate it to IPTV. |
