Vancouver actor banned from entering U.S after interrogation

A Vancouver actor’s budding career has hit a wall after he was interrogated by border guards for almost nine hours and issued a five-year ban on entering the United States.

“It’s kind of a crush to your career,” said Chad Rook. “It takes the breath out of you.”

The 30-year-old Vancouver-based actor and director has appeared on shows such as Supernatural and Sanctuary, and has a recurring role on the upcoming CW series Cult, premiering Feb 19

He did work in USA on this show: »www.imdb.com/title/tt2193053/

Did he not have a work Visa to do that work and they thought he was coming in again to work without a work Visa?

He has done a LOT of work in USA. »www.imdb.com/name/nm1756186/bio

Chad is relocating to Los Angeles in early 2013 to help span his acting career even further.

Of course, I have no way of knowing his legal status to do work in US. But I assume the customs dept does.

Maybe he overstayed or breached his B1 on previous stays. If he worked in the States and didn't pay Uncle Sam that's jail time, but without an active warrant the border would have just denied him entry based on his previous entry history.

Why didn't he just say he was going on vacation. I used to go to Skagway, Alaska to survey vessels, loading Copper Concentrates for Russia, on behalf of the Canadian Mining Company, based in Whitehorse, Yukon.
They should have been hiring a US Surveyor to do the work. I was never refused entry. Just said I represented the Canadian Mining Industry to oversee their loading.

I'm guessing there's more to this story... A working actor should have no issues crossing, if the paperwork is in order. There's something that's preventing his entry...

As for saying he was going on vacation? That's more then refusal, that could be fines, or jail time...

I used to work in the states fairly regularly; proper paperwork, and no attitude at the border, and I never had an issue....

quote:
“I thought they were just going to ask my intentions and let me go through,” Rook told The Province. The actor told guards he was headed to L.A. for vacation and to conduct meetings. He said the guards then accused him of not being upfront about his reasons for travel, and suspected him of attempting to work and set up permanent residence in the States without a visa.

When Rook tried to explain he had already started the work visa application process with the help of a lawyer — an application that can only be completed if there is a job offer waiting for him in L.A. — a border guard allegedly refused to listen and demanded yes-or-no answers.

Poor guy, he'll have to get a waiver; huge pita. Having the O1 app then claiming a B1 at the airport raised all sorts of red flags off. His O1 will now be denied with this denial.

I can't speak for crossing the border for work, but I can speak for just cross the border.

Border guards like very specific answers. Where are you going? How long are you staying? Why? etc..

If you're not precise on any of the answers they'll put you through the wringer. I've got it down to a science. Where are going? Seattle? Why? To see Pearl Jam and a Baseball game. Do you have proof? Yah here's my baseball tickets and receipt to pickup the tickets at will call. How long are you staying? Until Monday. done.

I'd imagine his answers might of gone something like:

1) Where are you going? L.A.

2) Why? To look for work. --- this probably didn't end well

3) How long? Dunno.

Just because your an actor doesn't mean you get to avoid all the BS rest of us deal with.

Time change...

i remember the last time i crossed the border. A couple of friend packed in 2 car (total about 7 persons, aged between 18 and 25). I was the driver of the second car and when i reached the US border i only told the agent that i was following the car in front of me. I do not know what the other driver told him but the agent did not ask more question and we were allowed to enter...

About 7 years ago, I went crossed with a friend.

"Where you guys going?"

"Too see friends."

"Have a good one."

Didn't even ask for an ID... Last couple of years have been pretty different though. They really wanted to know all the specifics.

An acquaintence of mine (russian guy) was denied entry into the U.S. and banned too but I don't know for how long. He's an amateur artist and was going to cross the border at Buffalo because he had some paintings that he was going to show to another art dealer in a NYC exposé.

Guard: "Where are you going?"

Friend: "To NYC"

Guard: "Why?"

Friend: "To show some of my paintings, I got them in my back seat".

Guard: "Are you going to show them or sell them commercially?"

Friend: "Well if the guy is interested I might sell some to him".

Guard: "Please park over there, there's some people that are going to speak to you".

My friend was interrogated for 2 hours and his paintings taken out of his vehicle, they were almost confiscated, he tried to explain to these neo-nazis that he was simply going to show them off and assured them he would not sell them if it was against the law, he was told to return to Toronto.

Next weekend he tried to cross at Lewiston near Niagara Falls and to his shock and horror he encountered the SAME border guard at a totally different border crossing, he was told to turn around to Toronto and was threatened with jail, he was banned from entering I don't know for how long.

Did they gamma ray scan him, too?

There's more to every story. I cross the border on a regular basis and never run into any issues.

Honestly I'm very curious to know how many harmless, ordinary people are banned from entry into the US these days simply because gung-ho, petty wannabe John Wayne type border security guards had a bug up their asses about whomever "looked at them wrong."

I'm sure such a statistic must exist somewhere but highly doubt that it is publicized much. All the same, it would prove very interesting to find out, perhaps under the freedom of information act, just how many "Terrorist, looney, psycho enemies of the state" have been banned for life just because they pissed off some hillbilly with a badge

Personally I'd rather dine on my own left foot before I'd venture into the US these days.

This happens both ways. If you a foreign national were to pre-apply for a Canadian work visa, then suddenly arrive at VYR and request a tourist visa.

You'd be in for a long talking to.

The actor also had to hand over passwords and access to his email, his Facebook and Twitter accounts, his cellphone and text messages for guards to investigate.
And then they wonder why I avoid crossing the border whenever possible

Agreed, they don't do well without specific answers. Years ago I worked for myself and used to travel during off months. My major customer basically took Dec/Jan off and I'd pretty much do the same (farming out the small stuff).

Crossing the border with no specific destination was insane, as the answer was usually just south / somewhere warm. Sometimes I'd travel by myself, a couple of times with someone else. I got better at it each successive time, but it was annoying.

Your loss.

If you have an attitude or have something to hide they'll figure you out fast. If you have neither you have nothing to worry about.

The same applies equally to those coming into Canada dealing with the CBSA.
