I agree that the search indexing is a pain. I was always thinking something had taken over my machine with the disk accesses starting up on its own. In particular, I find its behavior of indexing the browser cache to be particularly irritating.
Yet Vista/XP search will not do a content search within the Windows folder -- not that I ever needed that much. If this indexing is the default, there should have been some straight-forward way to control it.
Agent Ransack is a really good search utility -- even better than the XP and Windows 98 one. Like XP, it searches when and where you say to search.
