Sounds like a corrupted and/or failing hard disk. Put the computer into target disk mode, connect it to another Mac, and see if you can copy any data off. Run DiskWarrior on it and try copying data off of it again.

I agree, failing hard drive. Copy what you can off of it, replace the hard drive, start new.
