The 1704 tends to run pretty warm (while downloading large files)if your using it as both modem/router. When I first got mine I used it as wireless connection for a time BUT switched it to "dumb" modem because it's coverage was really bad.

My old Linksys 54GS puts it to shame but that aside I did notice it was a tad cooler once I didn't use it for wireless anymore and I have had no issues with it being hot but I don't have it enclosed as you do.

Im on 12Mbps, do you think bridging a N router would help since this only uses very old G?
