If that is the case the voltage cannot be as high as you measured. I agree with leibold See Profile and lutful See Profile meter is reading peak rather then RMS.

Since nothing has blown up yet I'd hold off on calling an electrician and do what bluechalk See Profile suggested. Get a Kill-A-Watt. It is a handy little device for all sorts of stuff and will tell you right away if you have a problem.

Go to your nearest hardware store and get a Kill A Watt. It should cost around $20. Its designed to plug into a wall power outlet and among other things, give you an accurate voltage reading.

"peak" value for perfect 120V AC sine wave is actually 172V.

120V x 1.414 = 169.7V

I am a DMMy who multiplied 172V peak by 0.7 to get 120V rms.

An electrician will charge you regardless if there is anything wrong. And if it's not on your side of your meter, all he's going to do is call the power company on your behalf.

The power company is obligated usually to at least check it out for free and repair anything that they are responsible for.

at 154VAC, incandescent bulbs will have a life of several minutes and burn like a supernova until they fail.

Are you seeing this?

If so, you have a problem. If not, as others have said, check the meter setup.

My DMM is reading 154 volts all over the house.

Can you post a photo of the DMM reading 154V? Maybe it is setup improperly.

It is very unlikely that AC RMS voltage would be that high for prolonged periods and not be reported by a whole bunch of neighbors to the utility.

By the way, the "peak" value for perfect 120V AC sine wave is actually 172V. So if your DMM was showing peak value, 154V reading may even mean you have lower than normal AC voltage.

I would unplug anything containing electronics, if it's not already too late.

Actually most electronics (those with switch-mode power supplies) are likely to be the least effected by this. Many of those devices will be rated for AC voltage from 90V to 250V which puts the 154V reading on the OP multimeter in the middle of the acceptable voltage range.

Electro-mechanical devices such as motors (as garys_2k See Profile already pointed out) are at a much bigger risk if that voltage is being confirmed.

For the OP, make sure that the DMM is set to measure AC voltage in RMS (root mean square) mode and not in Peak mode:

154Vpeak = 110Vrms

Call your power delivery co asap. It could be an open/failing neutral which can be hazardous.

All over the house, as in every outlet you've tested, then it's definitely a provider issue. Can you test line to line on a 240 volt outlet?

This could be dangerous, things like motors can overheat with the voltage that high. Call right away.

Presuming your meter is correct, call the provider and tell them you have overvoltage.

My DMM is reading 154 volts all over the house. I've had problems with a couple components, is this possibly the problem? If so do I hire an electrician or do I call the provider?
