Since nothing has blown up yet I'd hold off on calling an electrician and do what bluechalk suggested. Get a Kill-A-Watt. It is a handy little device for all sorts of stuff and will tell you right away if you have a problem.

 | reply to sap5885 Go to your nearest hardware store and get a Kill A Watt. It should cost around $20. Its designed to plug into a wall power outlet and among other things, give you an accurate voltage reading. |

The power company is obligated usually to at least check it out for free and repair anything that they are responsible for. |

| reply to sap5885 at 154VAC, incandescent bulbs will have a life of several minutes and burn like a supernova until they fail.
Are you seeing this?
If so, you have a problem. If not, as others have said, check the meter setup. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to sap5885 said by sap5885 :My DMM is reading 154 volts all over the house. Can you post a photo of the DMM reading 154V? Maybe it is setup improperly.
It is very unlikely that AC RMS voltage would be that high for prolonged periods and not be reported by a whole bunch of neighbors to the utility.
By the way, the "peak" value for perfect 120V AC sine wave is actually 172V. So if your DMM was showing peak value, 154V reading may even mean you have lower than normal AC voltage. |

| reply to jack b said by jack b:I would unplug anything containing electronics, if it's not already too late. Actually most electronics (those with switch-mode power supplies) are likely to be the least effected by this. Many of those devices will be rated for AC voltage from 90V to 250V which puts the 154V reading on the OP multimeter in the middle of the acceptable voltage range.
Electro-mechanical devices such as motors (as garys_2k already pointed out) are at a much bigger risk if that voltage is being confirmed.
For the OP, make sure that the DMM is set to measure AC voltage in RMS (root mean square) mode and not in Peak mode:

This could be dangerous, things like motors can overheat with the voltage that high. Call right away. |

 | My DMM is reading 154 volts all over the house. I've had problems with a couple components, is this possibly the problem? If so do I hire an electrician or do I call the provider? |
