Can you at least let me believe I am. It's much better for my mental health and when I travel I don't want to admit I live anywhere near Toronto

Sure, I'll use my exemption status to let you think that you are lol.

Oh, I have, and I'd still take that over a winter night in Timmins.

i just watched this Asian woman take a turn at exactly 0.000005 km/h from Markham Rd to Progress Ave last night.

My brother in law's wife is Chinese. She has hit several non-moving objects in the time I have known her. She also admits that they are the worst drivers. No one said it, she put it out there once. Another friend of ours is Chinese, she says the same thing.

A funny thing: driving through Markham in the winter when snow is expected. A parking lot full of cars with the wipers up. They have a paranoia of their wipers getting frozen to the windsheild for some reason.

Prejudice much? Problem gamblers of Timmins? How dare I ask do they become problem gamblers?

I don't know and I don't care. All I know that any time I am there every freaking radio station has some advertisement about problem gambling during every commercial break.

This isn't casino gambling I'm talking about. I'm talking about people spending their life savings on lottery tickets. Yup. Good ol' Timmins!

Having been there, I am *far far far* happier to be down here. So is my Dad. And so is my father-in-law who played hockey there when he was young.

We have our fair share of Asian tour buses that make their way to Niagara Falls all the bloody time. One got creamed on the 420 a few years back by some guy in a Civic fleeing from the NRPS down the wrong way of the highway, killing five or six people.

I dunno, I still think I'd take the drivers of Markham before I took the unplanned teenage pregnancies and problem gamblers of Timmins.

As much as I complain, for 1, Peterborough isn't real "Northern Ontario" even if they're in the 705 area code...and for all the cold and the fact we get more snow than Fort Erie (as per Environment Canada data), I'd rather be up here than down in Southern Ontario.

EDIT: For the record, there is a bus that goes to Timmins that comes to my casino twice a week...with a max capacity of 50 people on said bus...

And Tai-Pan tours doesn't run buses from Timmins to Rama twice an hour.

Being lumped in with Northern Ontario is no better.

I believe the current 905 plus 416 all used to be 416.

That's exactly what it was, it's just that 905 (and 416) is a much larger area code than just the immediate GTA like many people within the GTA seem to think. Like I said earlier, Selkirk to Castleton.

Regional Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.

Old pre-905 416 and 905 today also cover a much wider area than just southern York Region and southern Peel Region. But you already knew that.

I believe the current 905 plus 416 all used to be 416. Back then, dialing Hamilton from Toronto was 8 digits 1-xxx-xxxx with the leading "1" signifying long distance.

One weird thing I never understood happened after the 416/905 split, but long before the 647 Toronto overlay. Somebody from Revenue Canada was calling me, and his message said to call 416-xxx-xxxx. Since I lived in the 416 area code I dialed xxx-xxxx and got a "number not in service" message. After a week of phone-tag, and checking with the Toronto office, someone told me that he had a weirdo phone and I had to dial 10 digits (416-xxx-xxxx). First time I tried, it worked. I repeat, this was long before the 647 overlay. Any idea why this happened?

From Selkirk in Haldimand County all the way to Castleton in Northumberland County and as far north as Sutton.

basically the cities belonging to the Regional Municipality of Toronto, which was before it became a mega city, kept 416, while everyone else got 905. So the City of Etobicoke, City of North York, City of East York, City of Scarborough, City of York, and City of Toronto, all got to keep 416, while the City of Mississauga, City of Vaughan, City of Markham and possibly one more got to switch to 905.

possibly one more? You do know that 416 went way beyond Toronto right?

My big concern is that would be two more area codes that these "duct cleaning" scammers could use to harass on the phones.

(Vaughan and Markham didn't have city status in 1993, either)

1993.

They sent this huge package in the mail explaining the whole process several years before they did it. I remember they included this map of every single rate centre in what-was-then 416, with Toronto highlighted in red with 416 and everything else in grey with 905. Then they had this other page that said if your postal code starts with M, you're keeping 416. If it starts with something else, you're getting 905.

There was also the fun time where I kept getting calls on my cell phone from some woman in Fort Erie who thought she was calling her husband's cell. His phone number was 289-321, mine was (and to this day still is) 905-321 and the woman kept dialing 905 instead of 289. She couldn't wrap her head around it despite telling her repeatedly.

Because you do know what [his] phone number is, you could call him yourself and explain this to him.

I bet she won't forget after that.

I would have never called her outright stupid. I just laughed it off as someone who was old enough to probably have kept dialing 416 when we changed to 905, too.

Some of the calls were funny. One time she just went off on how he had to buy spam and toilet paper on the way home. No hello or anything, just from the moment I said hello she started. I mean... spam?

I got lucky and snagged an 871 number for a while in 2006 by sheer luck. Now you may find that people are less presumptuous and want to know 871, 991, 992, 993, 994.

It's even more fun with all the 289 numbers Cogeco is handing out for phone service.

She is just stupid in my books. I have the same thing with my email. I keep getting purchase offers from one real estate broker after telling them over and over. Since they copy their clients on it, I told them the next time I am going to actually let the client know they are sending this out and I will forward it to TREB. I will see if that makes a difference.
