Re: GTA getting new area codes 437 and 365 The issue is the way numbers are handed out to CLECs, ILECs, et all. IIRC correctly they're given numbers in blocks of 10k. Rogers, Bell and others are probably still sitting on 416 numbers. |

Phone numbers are also recycled, so when someone cancels their service, the number makes it's way back in to the pool (after 6 months if I recall correctly). |

 | reply to donoreo Stupid! Phone numbers are recycled and enough people cancel them to give to new customers, the GTA has 5 million people NOT 45 million so what's going on? |

LazManPremium join:2003-03-26 canada | I have 9 devices with assigned #'s in my house... 3 cellphones, 2 VoIP lines, an air card in my laptop; a car with OnStar and 2 tablets with cell-modems. If I had a cellular modem in my alarm, that would bring me to 10...
The tablets and onstar don't have published numbers, but there are numbers assigned by the cell provider for billing and routing purposes. |

 | Similar here. Three cellphones, one landline and one 3G iPad. My car has OnStar but it's disconnected right now. -- "It's all coming down!!" - Mike Holmes |

| reply to Gone said by Gone:said by J E F F:Well, closer to 45 million or so, you lose 12 million right away because no number starts with a 0 or 1, plus another 3 million or so reserved exchanges, like 911, 411, etc. You also lose all numbers that have 9 as a middle digit as well as all of the triple digit numbers and numbers with the same last two or same first two digits. What did you mean? My old number was 895 in an area of the city. As well as an 888 number....(headache when the 1-888 numbers came out) -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

At one time an NXX couldn't have 1 or 0 as the first or second digit. Now it's just the first. |

| reply to squircle At one time, 998 was a reserved number. You could dial 998 and the last four digits of your phone, hang up, and the phone would call you back. It was a neat trick back then.
Anyway, I loved this comment:
I remember our phone # in Toronto in the '50s. The "Central office code" was only two digits and they were expressed as letters - in my case "GE" (for Gerrard St.).
I still remember that phone number after 55 years, but what movie did i watch on Netflix last night - no idea!
That's progress, i guess. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| reply to Xstar_Lumini I think one of the problems is that exchanges (416-###-4545) area geographically locked. Also people who get rid of their phone, those lines are not used for some time. And companies quite often have numbers for each employee. (manager/supers anyway)
An example: 1 - land line at work 1 - work cell phone 1 - mobile internet 1 - cell phone 1 - land line at home 1 - VoIP for calling overseas 1 - FONGO or similar for cell calls 1 - Skype
So one person could easily burn through 8 numbers. My two kids (10 and 12) have FONGO on their iPod Touches, so those are 2 numbers right there...i think I have like 9 numbers.... -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| Here in Fort Erie, I don't believe they ever had CO names that anyone ever used. Back in those days you only had to dial four digits to call anyone, and by the time that changed they used numbers instead.
People in this town *still* only give out the last four digits of their phone number on the assumption you know it's an 871 number. It's weird. |

Port Hope, now 885, was TUrner so your number was given as TUrner 5-xxxx. When I was young we only dialed 5-xxxx for local numbers. This was until the mid to late 80s! -- The irony of common sense, it is not that common. I cannot deny anything I did not say. A kitten dies every time someone uses "then" and "than" incorrectly. I mock people who give their children odd spelling of names. |

GonePremium join:2011-01-24 Fort Erie, ON kudos:3 | Oh, I don't doubt they had names. The point was that no one used them.
Contrast this with a city like St. Cats where you had three COs going back even into the 1940s and everyone knew the names. |
