After a week of phone-tag, and checking with the Toronto office, someone told me that he had a weirdo phone and I had to dial 10 digits (416-xxx-xxxx). First time I tried, it worked. So the City of Etobicoke, City of North York, City of East York, City of Scarborough, City of York, and City of Toronto, all got to keep 416, while the City of Mississauga, City of Vaughan, City of Markham and possibly one more got to switch to 905.
--
Happiness is like peeing your pants... St. Cats did have one of the very first 289 prexies - 289-241 for Rogers cell phones, assigned even before the new area code went live. 289-213 for Bell Mobility came right after and they were handing out numbers in those prefixes almost the day that the new area code went live. The very last 905 prefix that was available for assignment before total exhaustion - 964 for Bell Mobility - was assigned 2005ish. And now, in 2013, St. Catharines had 365-961 assigned as a plant test code.

nitzguy posted : I only ever remember having to just dial 1 then the phone number for long distance within the same area code...that was at least until 1994ish as I'd call my grandparents in Elliot Lake from Sault Ste. Marie and it was just 1-848-xxxx....and on the call display I remember it would just pop up their 7 digit phone number....back when call display was NEW and not all phones had it...just 1 phone in our house had it actually lol.

I don't ever remember anything else around those parts.

...Stupid 249.....its all Peterborough and Barrie's fault really that we have idiotic overlay here. They're the ones gobbling up all the 705 #'s. as we'd have enough really otherwise probably to last us a long long time.
