i just watched this Asian woman take a turn at exactly 0.000005 km/h from Markham Rd to Progress Ave last night.

As much as I complain, for 1, Peterborough isn't real "Northern Ontario" even if they're in the 705 area code...

I believe the current 905 plus 416 all used to be 416.

Old pre-905 416 and 905 today also cover a much wider area than just southern York Region and southern Peel Region. But you already knew that.

basically the cities belonging to the Regional Municipality of Toronto, which was before it became a mega city, kept 416, while everyone else got 905. So the City of Etobicoke, City of North York, City of East York, City of Scarborough, City of York, and City of Toronto, all got to keep 416, while the City of Mississauga, City of Vaughan, City of Markham and possibly one more got to switch to 905.

mississauga used to be 416 and was forced to change to a 905 back in the late 1980's does anyone remember? maybe it was early '90's possibly

There was also the fun time where I kept getting calls on my cell phone from some woman in Fort Erie who thought she was calling her husband's cell. His phone number was 289-321, mine was (and to this day still is) 905-321 and the woman kept dialing 905 instead of 289. She couldn't wrap her head around it despite telling her repeatedly.

I got lucky and snagged an 871 number for a while in 2006 by sheer luck. Now you may find that people are less presumptuous and want to know 871, 991, 992, 993, 994.

Here in Fort Erie, I don't believe they ever had CO names that anyone ever used. Back in those days you only had to dial four digits to call anyone, and by the time that changed they used numbers instead.

People in this town *still* only give out the last four digits of their phone number on the assumption you know it's an 871 number. It's weird.

2006 was when we had to switch to 10-digit dialing

I only ever remember having to just dial 1 then the phone number for long distance within the same area code...that was at least until 1994ish as I'd call my grandparents in Elliot Lake from Sault Ste. Marie and it was just 1-848-xxxx....and on the call display I remember it would just pop up their 7 digit phone number....back when call display was NEW and not all phones had it...just 1 phone in our house had it actually lol.

Peterborough was 742, 743 and 745 then we got all big city fancy with 748 and then the uber ultra modern 876.

My mom has told me stories of growing up in Wallaceburg and only needing to dial the last five digits because there was only one exchange in town.

HA! I don't any of ours...I'm sure my mom would, though I think I recall one being...something like ADams ### and BRidgeport ###..stuff like that.
