Re: Opera Browser Switches To Open-Source Rendering Engine said by donoreo:So that is less diversity. Not a good thing overall. Webkit is also used in Apple Safari. I would usually agree, but I don't think Opera's Presto is really a player in the browser wars for progressive HTML5 support and speed. The real competition is IE, Mozilla, and Webkit. I think that Opera's support for Webkit will only progress things further as their work will now actually be relevant, forcing Mozilla and IE to continue upping their game. The only move I would like to see IE make is open source their browser, which is like saying I'd like to see the next pope to either be female or not white. -- "Padre, nobody said war was fun now bowl!" - Sherman T Potter

There's a non-zero chance of the next pope being non-white. But not female. -- 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 |

Anyway onto the topic....
While diversity is good, It is not always good if said divergence cannot agree to stick to the standards. If we look back to the days of IE6 and earlier versions we had websites that "Looks best in Netscape" or "Looks best in Internet Explorer" This lack of similarity is why corporations are stuck with the painfully obsolete IE6. Their internal apps that use a browser were written for IE6 and as such are completely non functional in later versions of IE or one of the actual functional browsers like Firefox or Chrome. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
