Re: [DSL] Internet Connectivity issues

So new tech called and told me that a pedestal was taken out by a snow plow, which was one of our problems, but that he'd fixed it. Also he said the office thought we were getting bonded but that it's not available yet through our Dslam so our line was getting congested and that's where the other problem was.

Last night was a nightmare though with 60% packet loss to open IP's.
Today looks different. We've only been dropped once and our sync speed is staying constant but upload speed is dropped down to 200k.

DSL Stats
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3551 200
Margin (dB) 2.5 13.4
Line Attenuation (dB) 45.1 41.7
Transmit Power (dBm) 19.8 12.1
FEC Errors 129588932 1961275
HEC Errors 8558771 328628
CRC Errors 1210464 0

There's no reason a DSL line they actually install should have that many errors or that low of margins. I'll be surprised if you can stay synced at 2.5dB margin for the DL. I've never known a DSL connection to be REALLY stable unless it's above 10dB on both up and down. Mine is around 20-25, but I also have attenuation of less than 20 and I can see my CO. I'd have them look more into the lines. Go from box to box along the road and find out where there's a problem. My friend had a second DSL line installed and he was connecting at 128/64 or something similar, and after Frontier went box to box redoing connections, his connection is stable with over 10dB margin and syncing at 5500/860.

You might want to see if they can get you down to 1.5mb/384kb and redo the Frontier-side exposed copper in your NID. Otherwise it could be a lot of work for them. Whatever you do, insist that they keep working until the line is stable and syncing at least 4mb/600kb. You should be able to do a 5mb/768kb without a problem if they get the margins under control.

We had those speeds for 3 days and was completely stable. That's my issue where did that go. were just over 2 miles from our Dslam so there is the distance but I still believe if the lines are solid we should be able to get that speed and stably again right? Now I feel like were throttled to a stable connection with the conditions that we have what that is I don't know.

Hello, sidearm1,

It sounds like you may want to give us a call to double check some troubleshooting steps and possibly review your line.

There are a few things that could be causing the symptoms you are seeing here such as filter setup or unfiltered devices connecting to the phone lines, but if you've already had the inside wiring checked out, you or Frontier technicians may have already checked this setup.

If you've checked this out already, please give us a call. There are a few different contact methods at this link

»www.frontierhelp.com/con ··· ctus.cfm

but it may be necessary to contact us via phone for some technical support processes.

Nothing else connected to the phone lines in the house(cell phones) no home phone. One question, the line from the pedestal to the house was cut a few years ago and frontier came out and fixed it(not cheap). Could that be the issue or would one of the techs we've had out here seen a problem between here and there already. I'm just grasping here.

I'd suggest replacing any cable Frontier runs with Cat5. I don't let them run their low quality cable in my house, so I installed it all myself. It's really quite easy, as normal phones only use one wire pair and Cat5 has 4 wire pairs. You may see better margins with higher quality cable in the house. Also, avoiding any splitters and couplers will help.

There should be a test jack on the NID. Plug the modem into it with a short known good cable and test the margins and speeds. If things improve, you've found your issue. However, I doubt this to be the problem, as you said it was okay at higher speeds before the problems started.

I wish I could tell you exactly what Frontier did to my friend's line to get it fixed, but the best solution is simply to track down the line from your house to the CO and redo every termination.

Just as a simple reply, yes you should be able to do those speeds on a good line. Longer lines typically use thicker copper so you should be able to achieve higher sync speeds. My friend has a longer line than you (about 2.5 miles maybe closer to 3) and we got it to sync at 7mbps for a few minutes before seeing problems. We got real world 6.3mbps download speeds on a line with 10dB margins and 51 attenuation.

If they try to leave you syncing at any less than 3mbps/512kbps, they're just being lazy, and if it's at 1.5mbps/384kbps or lower they should be replacing some lines at your distance from the CO or installing a remote.

I'm actually less concerned about phones in this case than I would be about having something like a combination phone jack/surge protector on the line.

If you are concerned that the line has physical damage from a previous incident and we determine that the line must be checked, please voice your concerns and we can put some extra attention on making sure the cables are not damaged.

If you are considering replacing your inside wiring, we would prefer that any changes to wiring be made by Frontier technicians, since we can be responsible for their work.

Just got off the phone with support again...So our line is provisioned for 6.9 down 1.7 up. There's something wrong that's for sure. A Tech is looking into it and is supposed to call me back. Hopefully today.

DSL stats now

DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 2665 532
Margin (dB) 8.0 6.8
Line Attenuation (dB) 45.0 42.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 19.8 12.4
FEC Errors 3851259 28218
HEC Errors 90976 328686
CRC Errors 41419 0

Sure changes alot.

The sun is shining over here today. The tech just left and I have a modem syncing at 7mbps! It ended up being a bad line from the pedestal to the house. We have a temp line and this spring a new one gets buried.
