[WIN8] What software for getting start menu back?

I am trying to get used to metro, one thing I don't like is that I have to go back to the metro page and log out, and wait, and then shut down/restart, there doesn't seem to be a one click method. What software is there that can bring back Win7 like interface?

StartIsBack - 2 PC Licenses $3 | 5 PC Licenses - $5

StartIsBack returns Windows 8 a real fully featured start menu and start button, behaving exactly like the ones in Windows 7.

I create shortcuts on the desktop for restart (shutdown /r /t 1) and shutdown (shutdown s /t 1).

Classic Shell. Just as kickass recommends above.

Free and works great. You can even set it to by-pass the Metro desktop on start up.

What you'll then have is what appears to be a snappier and faster version of Windows 7, but in a Windows 8 wrapper.

I have Start8 installed on my non-touch screen HP G60 laptop running Windows 8 (32-bit). My wife likes the older classic interface while I tend to use the new modern UI (aka Metro) interface. Anyway the screen shot shows the Start8 start button which is similar to Windows 7.

You can configure Start8 to boot directly into the classic desktop if you wish...

As far as shutting down this laptop I simply modified the power options so when I either press the power switch or close the lid the laptop powers off.

I'm also a big fan of Classic Shell since it's free, it works great and they're continually making improvements.

However if you want the precise Windows 7 start menu experience, Start8 is a little closer to the 'original' start menu behaviour, enough that I can't tell the difference.

Not to divert you from going back to the start menu, but you can quickly shut down any number of ways

1) you could redefine what your power button (the physical one, on your computer) does when pressed. It could be Shut down. Then just press the power button to shut down (Settings, Control Panel, Power Options, Choose what the power buttons do, Shut down)

2) You could shut down from the desktop: Windows-C, Settings, Click Power, Click Shut Down.

3) Make a shortcut to shutdown and to restart per above

I have done all those on my system. Over time I just got used to using #2, I didn't even remember having done #1 but sure enough it's set that way

I pinned a folder to my taskbar. Any program that installs and tosses a desktop shortcut.. I drag it into that folder.. That's my my kind of start button. Plus make shortcuts to do anything - simple needed often.

I like the tiles for weather, a digital clock, and the date.. that's about all I use there. Look at those when I startup while windows finishes loading my startup crapola, or when bored

IIRC, using Classic Start menu in W8, we can shutdown normally just like we did before in W7, Vista, XP and whatever other Windows OS used the beloved Start Menu in the past.

Ok, trying classic shell, it is pretty good, I don't know the merits of the paid ones...

They did a poor job with this, people, such as engineers, should have the option of what interface. My software writing BIL, ever since Win 98, has spent time after an install to make things as close to Win 98 as possible. It's how his brain works, what he likes, he doesn't like metro.

Me, most of what metro adds I can do without as far as what I've figured out. Give me something that CUTS down on how many clicks I have to do to do things such as shut down, not make it more of a hassle.

From what I've heard, internal uptake of Win8 at MS backs up your assertion.

I'm appalled that they would go out of their way like this to rip out an integral part of the UI. Stupid and arrogant.

Well, change isn't necessarily bad, and computer poeple need to be teachable. I am keeping an open mind to Win8, just had a long chat with someone about the fact that old attitudes and old psychology needs to be willing to step out of the box and let to learn new ways.

Then there's change for the sake of change vs meaningful and useful change.

A change isn't necessarily bad thing by itself. I agree. Pushing a new, phone-like design on desktop computers, where you can not open multiple windows on desktop at the same time and position / re-size them as you need, is not a good change at all. It's rather a big step back in usability and functionality...

I just purchased Start8. When the 30 day trial for it was up, I was rudely reminded of how much I hate Win 8 without it as all that crap like the charms bar was back and I had to again click a bunch of times to reboot, etc. Start8 has a choice on the Start menu to click if you do need the Metro side for something.

I've found programs from Stardock in the past to be very good, stable, and improved when needed. I tried Classicshell but I like Start8 better. I resisted trying any of them for a couple of months. I wish I had not waited to get Start8. It makes a big difference in whether Windows 8 on a desktop computer is tolerable.

I also added Quick-launch back and that has helped too as well as GodMode added.
