Re: flat tire (a head scratcher)

Our tires had slow leaks on the mini van. After being looked at by a repair shop, it was determined that the rim lip had deteriorated, and was allowing air to leak out. The rims were the aluminum alloy type. In GA, they were fine, but it seems that up in Ohio, they didn't react well with salt. We have since replaced the rims with steel one, and the tires stay inflated.

Now my truck has started developing similar leaks as the old van wheels. Add to the salt, potholes, and it's a recipe for all sorts of problems.

I hate the heat of GA, but I will admit, the roads down there were gentler on a vehicle.

My Jeep had issues with leaking bead seals. Was intermittent and worse when cold. The aluminum rims oxidize and make it hard to seal.

When I got the last set of tires, I had them wire brush the bead area and use bead sealer. Since then I have had no problems.

Have seen valve stems leak and also the Schrader valve work its way loose. Often tightening the valve is all they need.

The shop I deal with, has said it was the well beads. They typically clean the bead, put a sealer on the rim, and put the tire back on. They haven't charged us for doing that as of yet.
And they were doing it about 4 to 8 times a year for the van. Then we got steel wheels for it. Now my pick up truck is starting to do the same thing, so we may get steel wheels for it. The truck is only 8 years old. The van is 14 years old, and we are looking for a new vehicle this year.

That's probably my problem. I have factory aluminum wheels on my Jeep....
