Motorola NVG589 - New U-verse Gateway

I was looking at the Motorola website and found this...

»www.motorola.com/us/cons ··· ,pd.html
Then....
»www.homepna.org/products ··· roducts/
Lists this product as
"Motorola NVG589 Bonded VDSL 11N Gateway"

Would be pointless to make a battery/modem specifically for a service that wouldn't use it, wouldn't it ?

»certifications.wi-fi.org ··· WFA16256

Seems to be an IPTV/Internet/VOIP modem.

I wonder what the ADSL2+ gateway would be then? The 5111NV? I guess if they somehow don't use this then it'll be the Pace 5168NV for both ADSL2+/VDSL2.

Re: Motorola NVG589 - New U-verse Gateway?

Seems like, from a logistics/supply/etc... POV, it would be better to use a single gateway for any given installation, assuming the cost difference isn't prohibitive.

I wonder what it'll look like lol.

Motorola Live Chat:"The NVG589 is a new AT&T Bonded VDSL gateway intended for AT&T U-Verse network with triple-play (Internet, TV, and Phone) functionality."

All I know so far:
-It's 2x2 wireless N with 300 Mbps with no dual band

-VDSL2

-Pair Bonding

-Can do HPNA

-Triple Play Gateway

-Doesn't require an external battery backup

Hopefully it'll have a proper bridge mode or at least be hackable.

Re: Motorola NVG589 - New U-verse Gateway

If it's anything like the NVG510, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!

As for the Pace 5111NV/5168NV, it'll be equally crap because it's based on the 4111.

And if they do use the 5168NV for both VDSL2 and ADSL2+ installations, I hope they'll let people buy it if on ADSL2+.

But hopefully they'll offer the 5111NV for ADSL2+.

That was the rumored modem and didn't really have any signs of it actually being used.

The NVG589 has AT&T U-verse logos and is made for the service which is now more likely to be the real modem being used. It'll probably be this + the Pace 5111NV(For both ADSL/ADSL2+) unless Motorola is also making the ADSL2+ one or just keeping the NVG510/4111N.

I hope it's the motorola for VDSL2. Could probably be rooted to give a true bridge mode.

AT&T used MOT for their IP-DSL service instead of Pace/2wire but I don't see them leaving Pace, especially since they've been using their equipment from pretty much day 1. Pace/2Wire also gives them the easy option of remote control.

The pace hardware itself really isn't all that bad. AT&T just strips out features. That's the problem.

For example, most of the Pace/2 Wire gateways allow for proper bridging. The AT&T firmware just doesn't allow for it.

Because AT&T is evil :P.

I still have my fingers crossed for a true bridge mode! Hopefully someone will get one of these soon and they'll post the admin page screenshots.

I remember there being a manual for the NVG589. All I saw was "IP Passthrough" .

The manual is here:
»apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/r ··· Z5NVG589
(Credits go to Mackey for the link)

It does say in the manual that:
"This guide describes the wide variety of features and functionality of the Motorola Gateway, when used in Router mode. The Motorola Gateway may also be delivered in Bridge mode. In Bridge mode, the Gateway acts as a pass-through device and allows the workstations on your LAN to have
public addresses directly on the Internet."

I couldn't find the option in the manual unless I was just skipping over it though.

Looking at the manual it seems the feature is indeed available (page 75). Let's just hope AT&T doesn't disable it via a firmware update.

So is IP passthrough the same thing as bridge mode?

Any word on when and where they are going to start deploying these?

No clue. I remember seeing someone on the AT&T forums claiming they had one(When they were looking for options). I also tried to ask a live chat person and one said I would be able to get one and another said that I had to have a triple play but I doubt they were telling the truth .

Yep. Some routers/modems have funky bridge mode features but IP passthrough essentially lets you hand off routing to another device.

Once I Know they are being fielded, I plan to pester retentions for a new gateway.

I'll be doing the same thing. It's about time I actually get to USE my block of IPs.
