5th Gen Airport Extreme 2.4Ghz issues

So I had a 4th gen APE and it worked great but I got a new 5th Gen APE for a gift....

My internet was going really really slow, speed tests were .05 down... but the wifi connection strength is perfect...

I use my MBA and on the 5Ghz and speed tests are great...

So I change the channel on the 2.4GHz to channel 10 and speeds are great on the iPhones and iPad... I change back to automatic and speeds are crappy again...

Could it be the APE is bad? How come my 4th Gen worked perfect on automatic but not the 5th?

EDIT: Well channel 10 worked for 1 hour and now I changed it to channel 4 and it seems to work with "use wide channels" disabled...

Also another thing, i checked under system profile, wi fi, what other people are using the same channels i was using and 1 other person is but very weak signal.. AND i used a channel that no one was using and still slow speeds

Definitely sounds like there is a problem with the hardware. See if you can't return it for an exchange. In the mean time there was a firmware update recently, you could try that as well … »support.apple.com/kb/DL1617

My thought is....is there another SSID in your neighbor hood broadcasting on channel 10 and causing interference with your router and signal? You can also choose another manually and see how it performs. Hope that helps to some extent. You can ullize a program called iStumbler which will list other SSID in your area along with the channels they are broadcasting on. Hope that helps to some extent.
Here is a link to CNET which will have the download link for the MAC version of iStumbler. »download.cnet.com/iStumbler/3000···917.html

If you are running 10.8 or later you no longer need it. Just option-click the wi-fi menu and choose wi-fi diagnostics. (written by the same guy).

Changing the channel did the trick! Turns out there are several 2.4 ghz routers in my area operating on ch 1-5. I changed mine to 11...perfect! It's every bit as fast as my 5 ghz connection now.

Thanks!
