[Connectivity] SL / Netflix / CDN

Just wanted to say I think it's great SL is moving ahead with this type of deal with netflix.

It's great to see them moving quickly, and not being the last to do something pro consumer.

Big thumbs up!

You can see the big green light over on netflix with this url:

Your Internet Provider is ready for Super HD!

Yeah, but what movies are actually super hd (have found none unless they aren't labeled)? Will these movies stream in superhd to ALL my devices or just new ones? Have they decided to include surround sound yet for people other than the ps3?

It's a big hype over nothing IMo

The big question now is whether or not Netflix streaming will still count against usage caps. Since Netflix content is now cached on SuddenLink's local network then the internet backbone should not be nearly as congested.

At home i get the green light, but at work where we have a direct fiber connection it is red. Guessing they bypass that stuff for a business connection.

I think the caps, if about usage at all, really are about the last mile link, not the backbone links. I'd think it would still count. Others would cry net-neutrality violations as well, and I think they would be justified.

They shouldn't have caps at all, period.

I have the Suddenlink TiVo premiere and when I click the link it does have a green light, but I can't access Netflix from my TiVo box. How do I do that?

Suddenlink takes the Netflix functionality out of their Tivo's. you'll have to use another device to watch it.

Well I finally go around to trying out the super HD on my wii u tonight. Didn't see anything in super hd. Went back to the page and now its showing that Suddenlink is not ready for superHD. Wonder what happened?

Gator, I'd previously been to that link and determined it to be a train wreck of a FAQ. It fails to even half answer ANY question on that page, let alone the ones I asked.

I was playing around with Netflix on the PS3 last night and noticed a ton of movies and shows tagged as "Super HD" and "5.1" - not too shabby.

For reference, the link above shows me "Your Internet Provider is ready for Super HD!"

Yeah, I'd really hate to have to go buy a ps3 just to get my 'super hd' in surround though, lmao

At this point we have half a dozen devices in the house that support Netflix in Super HD. Take your pick.

I have half a dozen streaming netflix also, none are aparently working with superhd, even though i have no problem w/ 1080p from vudu. But my statement was about 5.1/7.1 surround, do your half dozen devices get the stream in surround or stereo like everything else?

1 edit

I fired up the Xbox to compare (which we normally avoid due to the annoying auto-play that can't be turned off). It appears that both consoles offer me various combinations of "Super HD" and "5.1" depending on what the movie offers, however the Xbox only calls them "HD" and "5.1". Both are decoded by my receiver as Dolby Digital 5.1, so it's a real surround source and not a stereo up-mix.

Hitting the Select button on the PS3 controller shows me "1080 Super HD/5.1" in the info text. I'm not sure what the equivalent is on the Xbox app.

Really don't want to buy either console just to get surround sound, lol. Maybe I'll find a cheaper ps3 after the ps4 comes out :s

No one suggested that. Plenty of devices support 5.1 on Netflix that aren't consoles. Pick one that you like.

And where is a listing of any of them other than the consoles? I've been searching and searching for awhile. Netflix simply won't just tell me which ones work with 5.1.....
