Ya I know what lance did
something along the lines of the following
train at high attitude so the body makes more red blood cells per volume, then do something like a double red donation.
Then resume training till blood is back to normal and then inject the removed blood back in and go compete before the body removes the extra.
repeating the 1st steps a few times to build up a supply is also a possibility (I'm not sure how fast the body purges extra.)
(more like getting light headed from pure O2.)
