inconsistent speed (mount prospect,IL)

Hi,

I am a customer of the WOW! phone, internet, and cable package - there's a fancy name for it, but it escapes me. I don't watch much TV nor talk on the phone much, but I am a heavy internet user and subscribe to the 50Mbps tier.

Anyway, I have been experiencing an odd issue recently, maybe not that odd actually. I've had WOW for over a year and have ALWAYS been able to obtain 50Mbps download night or day. I understand that 50Mbps is not guaranteed, but I've been getting pretty inconsistent speeds lately that has me thinking of downgrading or even jumping ship to comcast. It now appears that my normal download speed throughout the day is about 20 - 30 Mbps - a respectable number, but basically half of what I pay for. If i try sometimes really late at night, like 12 AM, I was able to pull 50 Mbps. However, that does not seem to even be happening anymore. The upload is 5 Mbps anytime during the day or night.

Are there any suggestions of what I can do?

I called WOW and they said everything "looks good" on their end. I'm using WOW issued equipment with the arris modem with built in wifi/router.

I've seen people post their modem numbers, so here are mine. Does anything look good or bad?

Thanks,
Joe

I have periodically had similar issues. I'm not an expert, but I suspect at times some nodes get overused. My impression in the past was the only fix is to wait for WOW to supplement the bandwidth on your node, which can take months.

2-3 years back, I used to be on the 15meg plan, but noticed my speeds dropped to the point I would cap out at about 9-12meg. After a few weeks of that, I finally called WOW and had them downgrade me to the lower 7meg package. Figured why pay for the higher package if they can't provide the speeds. After several months (prob 6+), I eventually switch back to the 15meg plan.

Here is the most recent speedtest, using WOW's sanctioned speedtest tool here: »speed.nap.wideopenwest.com/

Download Speed: 20.915 Mbps (20915 kb/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5.289 Mbps (5289 kb/sec transfer rate)

I took a look over your modem and the CMTS and I'm not seeing anything that would stand out as an issue. Can I ask how you're running these speed tests? Wired or Wireless? Multiple computers or just one? How many devices, and what type of devices do you have behind the modem?

I am running the speed tests on a wired connection at speed.nap.wideopenwest.com/ and also using Steam to download games to try to get a sustainable read - same results.

I have a few computers and devices behind the router, but any device I use yields mostly the same result.

I have 2 desktop's, 2 laptops, 2 NAS devices (no internet connectivity), and two iPads - at max, 2, sometimes 3, total devices are in use simultaneously. However, any time speed testing is done, the other devices are not being used (to be sure they're not eating up bandwidth). I've had these devices since I got WOW a year plus ago and never had these issues until recently.

I guess I'll be downgrading then unfortunately since I can't really get anywhere near 50 anymore. Just did another speedtest and yielded 33 Mbps download.

One thing that really bothers me is I really wish I was able to access the wow modem's router to change my wpa password to something more secure than just numbers, but the tech changed the password from "password" to something else!

Can the modem be restored to factory? That should reset the password.

I would recommend having a technician come out and take a look. He can try hooking up a different modem to see if it makes any difference, as the modem itself could be the whole problem. He could then also assist with setting up the router configuration how you would like it.
