Re: Youtube sucks for me

Here is a Traceroute. My wife noticed it maybe a week ago. It happens on pretty much every video site we visit.

It seems to come and go for me. Depends. I figure it's just that peering between AT&T and YouTube sucks.

I've had Youtube issues on both Comcast and AT&T U-verse. Randomly once and awhile videos would be horribly slow loading and would constantly buffer even on 240p. It's on and off though and doesn't occur too often. So it's not a AT&T specific issue I believe.

wireshark packet capture
said by Dennis:

said by rickincali:

Sane issue for me. Connected via cable or wifi the videos freeze and are all choppy. I connect to my work VPN and they play without issue. I think this is the final straw that I have been waiting for to change providers.

If you are experiencing this issue I'd like to ask that you please include a traceroute. It will really help in narrowing down any common points. A wireshark packet capture would be even better.

I cannot recreate an issue here in Chicago on my personal Uverse line but I only watched one video since I don't know what specific one is being played.

So:
1. Traceroute
2. Date/Time first noticed
3. Video that exhibits the issue.

Im in the chicago area as well. Started noticing the problem on the 15th of february. I had no issues earlier today but then the non stop buffering started up once again at about 3pm cst. It seems to happen with most videos on youtube. For example this video:

I can try one when I get home. I'm just afraid that if I do a capture now that too many secretes would be in the file

However yes I experienced it too. Sometimes doing something simple and stupid like reloading the page works! Over the weekend it took me over 5 minutes to watch a clip less than a minute long.

It's probably not worth it to call AT&T because all you'll get is some mindless drone who will read from a script how to reboot your RG or computer or some other useless solution. The best chance we have is hoping that someone from AT&T, who can actually escalate this issue, reads these posts. Or maybe we could bitch to Google/YouTube and they'll light a fire under AT&T's lazy ass.

Well that's what makes this so hard to troubleshoot. I've been watching 720p and 1080p files on my Chicago based Uverse line all morning and haven't been able to reproduce it. It's not a case of laziness really.

Add to that people from multiple geographic area's commenting on the issue (which generally rules out routing issues) and multiple ISP's also complaining it makes it a very hard issue to pinpoint.

Probably should start tracking the type of CPE/RG I have a 2wire 3801 and can't reproduce the issue. Some random posts have said disabling IPv6 but it was clearly for a motorola CPE.

A little more research on this (only a little though):

This video plays at 720p without any buffering pauses, downloads as I expect most YouTube videos to. It downloaded from r11---sn-q4f7dns7.c.youtube.com (74.125.3.80) based on packet sniffing.

I tried the above meteorite video and it was able to load and play before the bottom video even fully buffered.

Here is a longer video which seems to buffer and stall constantly.

The video AdamB linked works fine for me at 720p, I was routed to r7---sn-q4f7dn7y.c.youtube.com for it, and here is the trace to that:

AdamB, can you see which server you're being routed to and trace to it?

I attached a pcapng file from wireshark. Im not familiar at all with the program so hopefully it is what you are looking for.

Thank you very much. Sadly without knowing your BAN I can't verify you don't have a line issue but that pcap does show that the core issue caused by TCP packet retransmissions and dup's. That doesn't really isolate where exactly but it does help us rule out a few other possible issues.

Youtube has been sucking a lot for me lately (and I'm on FIOS!). I don't even try to watch at 1080p, and lately 720p and even 480p have been unreliable to load fast enough to watch without buffering.

It's prime time and AT&T is just laughing at my feeble attempts to watch a video on YouTube. "Oh you want to watch that video, here have some buffer! Just kidding"

Here is what I'm trying to figure out. If it's a bottle neck issue with AT&T then why isn't any other service impacted? I'm watching 1080p videos via wireless with no issues right now.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if it's because I cancelled Uverse cable last year and won't respond to the weekly e-mail and letter from AT&T.

You are not alone:

Comcast.
Cox.
Charter.
Mediacom.
CenturyLink.
Frontier Communications.

Either all these ISPs are in collusion against Google, or there are issues with Google transit/peering.

Don't forget load balancers. The only other time I've seen this before was with misconfigured load balancer....of course I don't have enough wireshark packet captures to prove it.

It's gotten especially bad this evening.
It is now past 11PM and I am starting to get page timeouts off and on and virtually no videos load.

I'm having issues as well. U-Verse user in So Cal. This appears to be a widespread issue across different providers. There are a few posts on the Google help forum for YouTube.

»productforums.google.com/forum/#···al-issue

My guess is it's something going on between the ISPs and Google/YouTube. Just going to take some time to find it.

Hurry up and wait. Just pause the video you want to watch and go do something else for a bit. Not much any of us can do.

No amount of investigation is going to help random YouTube videos from buffering or being non playable. It's not the isp's fault, it's not Google's fault. It's just a bad route and or congestion to said particular video, and is quite inherent of the nature of the YouTube service. YouTube isn't Netflix.
The only way to troubleshoot it is to toggle a proxy or use any number of options to vary the route when you encounter problematic videos. If you work that into your normal YouTube routine you will have a lot more time to invest into working on problems that can actually be solved.

That would be fine if ANY videos played.
I have been trying random videos for the last 2 hours and I can't get any video to play at all.

The only videos that play without issue are the ads that come before the actual video.
I can't say I am surprised that the ads work and not the videos.

The same videos play fine if I use my phone for access but I only have a certain amount of data available on my phone...
