Upgraded my 2011 i7 Imac 27 today

Click for full size
The wrong way to open your IMAC
Greetings

Well - My Imac is one year old so I figured it was time for a little tinkering..

I added a 256G SSD connected to the second SATA and mounted it under the Optical drive. I also upgraded the RAM to 32 Gig.

Upgrade not for the fat fingered among us but some good videos and Ifixit manuals out there so it really went smooth.

I did come aross this picture - pretty funny.

I was careful and used the proper suction cups for removing the glass

Worth the upgrade - application load times are incredible - my entire Iphoto library in seconds. Really worth it..

Yes. I posted a thread awhile back detailing setting up Fusion Drive on my MacBook Pro. You can also google - plenty of instructions around. You'll need somewhere to copy off all the data on both drives as they need to be reformatted. Then you run a few commands while booted from an OS X install DVD/USB and reinstall. Pretty simple.

Personally I really dont see the long term advantages of the fusion drive. I see the current SSD configuration (either SSD and HDD or SSD/HDD fusion) as a short term bridge until cost of large capacity SSD becomes more realistic and the new technology (heating the SSD cells) comes on line to extend SSD r/w life.

My setup is very simple

SSD has applications, system and most used data as well as itunes itunes lib and iphoto libs. some archives in my user data directories, VM's, etc are all sym-linked to the HDD.

I cant believe no body thought the toilet plunger was funny - Maybe that it the way your supposed to do this......

So are you suggesting I put the toys away first?

Large capacity SSDs that are also affordable are a LONG way off so Fusion Drive isn't a short term bridge, it is a long term one. By the time I am ready to retire my new iMac, I expect 8TB HDDs to be the norm and I just don't see SSD pricing coming down that fast.

Well I guess large capacity SSD units is something that needs to be defined by the individual.

I've been buying SSD units for a while now. My first one was a Kingston SSDNow V Series SNV-S2 64GB models for something like ~$130 in what seems like years ago. My most recent one was a Samsung 840 500GB model for about ~$330 which came with a free game voucher valued at about ~$50.

I guess I consider 500GB for ~$330 fairly good and expect it to get better in due time.

Those mSATA SSD units tend to stay up there in price though,.....

Actually, the toilet plunger method works just fine, provided you buy a CLEAN one at the dollar store.

Those expensive suction cups, while nice, are not necessary. I've used a dollar store plunger to fix several aluminum macs at work.

For my 2008 iMac I used suction cups from a dart gun bought at the CVS for $3; no way I'd be able to break the glass with those and I got 6 of them in the package.

How do you keep the dust out of the screens?

I used the original box, Styrofoam and wrapping material. I placed the glass in the box and the display unit was wrapped in the same material that the Imac came wrapped in. This was then also placed in the box (flipped over the Styrofoam so cut-outs faced up).

When re-assembling, after display was screwed back in and before I closed the glass - I cleaned all surfaces with a NEW microfiber cloth.

This web link has a video that I followed. It also shows the tool-kit (including suction cups) you will need. One change from the video that I learned from some user comments was when using cables to help center the logic board - don't use an Ethernet cable as the tab can get stuck behind the case. I used an ethernet cable but I broke off the tab to insure it would not get stuck

I'll be putting a SSD in my iMac sooner rather than later. Waiting for the prices to drop a little bit more.

32 gigs of memory and 250G SSD around $400 - not a bad upgrade.....

The machine screams - the I7 is a powerhouse and now with the real fast I/O and additional memory - wow!!!!!

If you do the upgrade - dont follow the iFixit guide - they have you replacing the ODD. There is a second SATA port on the back of the logic board and the SSD fits under the ODD. The link I posted above is the best tutorial I found.

Ik what ur saying. I already maxed out the memory in mine. I can't justify a $250-300 SSD purchase right now

How much memory are you running - it supports up to AT LEAST 64gigs - depending on if you can get the 16's....

I didnt have time (or a free hand) to take many pictures but here is a shot after the display was removed.

For those of you who have never been inside an Imac, the Optical drive is the silver square on the right. The SSD fits nicely underneath it and plugs into the second SATA port on the back of the main logic board (lower-center).
