I saw something similar on the news. Former astronaut/scientist said they need to know at least 2 yrs out of the impending impact in order to be able to deflect them. They didn't even see this one coming.

In the late 70s, NASA was going to try and use a booster unit to keep Skylab in orbit. The shuttle wasn't ready in time and they decided that available rockets weren't suitable, for some reason. The result is that Skylab ended up crashing to Earth and breaking up in the atmosphere.
