Speedstream 4200 restart/DC/DSL link down issues

As the subject states, I'm having some issues (I think) with my 4200. When it stays up it works well, but it has been failing often for the past 2 weeks or so. It seems to usually do one of four things:

1.) 4200 log shows that everything is fine, but I have major traffic issues - 30%+ ping loss to default GW, unusable Internet connectivity. Disconnect/reconnect works but doesn't fix the traffic issues. Reboot from power switch or web UI fixes the issue.
2.) 4200 log shows LCP down - with or without DSL link down (DSL light is still green whenever I've had a chance to look at it). DSL reinitializes and connectivity is restored
3.) same as #2, but DSL doesn't seem to come back after several minutes, and sometimes (when I have no need to use it) for hours. Again, a reboot fixes the issue.
4.) 4200 seemingly reboots - i.e. - short log showing ~64 seconds of typical startup, ending with DynDNS updating. Sometimes connectivity is fine after this, sometimes it like #1 above. I haven't caught this reboot, but have captured it after the fact in the logs.

I restored to factory defaults and went through the Windstream online config, entered my credentials, etc. So far the results are about the same.

So... I'm guessing I need a new DSL modem/router. I had two 5200s die on me previously. What should I be looking for in a replacement (Wi-Fi not needed)? Any advice on how to proceed? Should I consider buying my own replacement elsewhere?

I will say that the last two times I've had major issues I got the run-around for well over a week over the phone, then ultimately got escalated to a local field tech who was great. The last time the resolution was an upgrade from a T3 to an OC3 on the DSLAM, and it only took about a week once the right people were involved.

Either, aurrohlcs03-10k (BRAS) is booting you off, or somewhere else down the line is, like the BAS/LAC it's being aggregated to, or their RADIUS server.

Or your modem is indeed on it's last leg, but I doubt it.

If they are not working on the DSLAM then By the log entries it looks to me the modem is going. About six months ago I was having this very same issue with my 4200 right after the DSLAM was upgraded and toward the end of that cycle I also had these entries throughout the logs when the issue occured..

The link would go up and down randomly and sometimes it would stay up and sometimes it would not. Sometimes a reboot or modem cycle brought it back but it would not stay stable.

I called Windstream and had them send me a new modem (sagemcom f@st 1704 is what their pushing) and the issue was resolved. They tried to feed me some BS about paying for that modem but if you bitch to the right people you can get it for free just bypass customer service and go to retention.

Do you mean last leg because it is old, or last leg because it is behaving badly, or maybe both?

Thanks for the input

I called Windstream today about an unrelated issue (measured rate toll block for "expanded local" area, which, in short they won't do for less than $2.99/mo) and the CSR offered me a Sagemcom 1704 for "free" with the $10/mo security package which I can supposedly cancel after 3 months, the first of which is free. Kind of a PITA for a piece of hardware, but $20 isn't too bad. Free would be better - especially since the last time my DSL modem was diagnosed as failed (probably incorrectly), Windstream replaced it at no cost w/ a verbal 12 month agreement.

Also, I put an old Speedstream 5200 e242 in place, and it has been rock solid for almost 20 hours as of this AM, and got quite a bit of use late yesterday. I'll watch it for a couple days, but it looks like the 4200 is the issue.

So my question now is, do I take the almost "free" Sagemcom, push a little harder for "free," or look for my own 3rd-party ADSL2+ router? Any suggestions?

Could be one or the other, or both. I've seen every thing from blown caps, PSUs, resistors, to memory problems causing the PPPoE service to restart, so it could be anything.

I just went through the same process with a 4200. Very similar if not exact as it started by losing sync with the DLSAM. The red power led would light, and the modem would reboot. It would get similar log results, and finally the DSL light finally just styed blinking and the log showed waiting. The rep convinced me that my modem was dying. I took the cover off, and replaced one capacitor that had a bulging top, the 1000uf near the power switch. After doing that, and inspecting the printed circuit board, I discovered what looked like corrosion on some of the traces. Copper oxidized to the green color, and white splotches that maked it look as if it had been dipped in salt water, leaving the salt behind in several places. I used a magnifying class and a pick to try to cleanup the corrosion and make sure there was no junk causing any surface mount pin to be connected to the adjacent pin.
After that, I got the DSL light to blink forever when I turned it on, with a solid green power light that didn't cycle to red on a whim. Wonder if burnishing the corrosion off finally broke the conductivity.
I got a 2wire for $40 from a pawn shop. Still had the plastic film on the front panel, and wires/power brick/ were all in sealed bags. It works, but is not as responsive to interface as the 4200. I can address it at 192.168.254.1, and it won't respond quickly even with no other traffic, but if I use the gateway.2wire.net address it responds much more quickly.
I miss the 4200.

I would push the FREE route and pay nothing for any add on security or extend any contract. When my 4200 went out they tried like crazy saying it will cost me $120 for a new modem, your contract will need to be extended...bla....bla...bla.

I haven't been under contract for 5 years and would NOT allow them to enter me into one. That said the deal you were offered is through customer service.

Customer Service --- Mission goal is to make you semi happy while still making the company money any way they can. Very limited in what they can offer and do to address your issues beyond the basics.

Customer Retention ----- Mission goal is to keep you has a customer. Have more options to address your issues and these include things like total month credits, more then the standard $10 credits CSR offers, FREE equipment and service calls...etc.

If any rep takes a "hard a##" stance then just ask for their lead or supervisor. Always push it up the chain of command until your issue is addressed to your satisfaction.

The Speedstream 5200 e242 stayed rock-solid for about a week until the Sagemcom 1704 showed up and I had time to install it. It, in turn, has been solid for about 2 weeks, so the problem was almost certainly the 4200. I took the "free" w/ security package deal. I ordinarily would fight a little, but the dollar amount was low enough, and time is currently scarce enough that it wasn't worth the effort.

Latency on the Sagemcom 1704 was worse than I anticipated. Pings to the next hop out (default gateway) were consistently 8-10ms with either Speedstream. Now they are 15-18ms, and I actually pulled a 2nd router from the mix (yeah, I know double NAT is bad, but it worked, it was my only wireless AP for a while, and I'm not forwarding any ports, so I never bothered).

Thanks for the responses and help.
