 | Brand new player needing some hunter advice Hello guys, I am a 2 day player looking for some advice on my hunter character that i put together. I went with a worgen (i think thats what its called) hunter. Im currently level 14 and have found out that i can start doing dungeons at level 15. I went ahead and picked the BM class already. Is this a good idea or is marksmanship better. Most of the youtube people seem to sway toward BM but that is also players at level 85-90 so that doesn't really pertain to me. Also ive only been looking stuff up at work (which blocks all gaming websites and just about anything that can help me with the game) which is how i came across this gem of a site. Im completely clueless on what kind of gear boost im supposed to be looking for as far as intellect or agility and all that is concerned. I have really low level gear i want to say my crossbow is like 24-33 dmg or something like that not sure on the specs of it i haven't been looking at the boosts so much as the armor or dps of the weapon (although i think this is a mistake after watching some vids ppl trashing things that dont contain their spec boost). Any help would be appreciated greatly. Last question i have is what to do with my pet in a dungeon. I caught a bear yesterday which seems like a pretty good one but i know from playing other games that i dont want him chasing down enemies in dungeons and aggroing too many. I am going to try to hit level 20 today and will probably play religiously on my days off this week any suggestions on any min gear stats i should be looking at for a lvl 15-30 char would be really helpful and the best way to get them. |
|
 | Also any specific addons you guys might find useful for me that would help would be awesome. I currently have addon manager, bagnon, auctionator, a quest guide one, and maybe one or two more i can't think of at the moment. |

| reply to HarryJWolf Intel gear is worthless on a hunter. That must be dated what you read. We use focus instead. Agility is what you want to stack. "Monkey" gear is always a good bet. For a beginning hunter I'd advise staying Beast Master. That way you're not constantly drawing aggro or aggravation - if you have more than your pet you'll draw the mob to you. Find the addon (this is a crucial one for hunters) "Omen" which will show who has aggro.
Dungeons, rule of thumb for starters, take a cat (agility boost) or a dog (crit boost) are two of the best ones. Others have more specified talents but you can't go wrong with a cat or dog. There is a whole slew of pet talents that sometime overlap with other player buffs but don't worry about that quite yet.
Sites that is mandatory reading in off time:

That should get you started.

| reply to HarryJWolf Welcome to the forum.
A hunter is always a good class to start with.
Worgen Hunters are fine.
I am and have loved being a BM, though in dungeons BM's are sometimes underpowered.
Remember to turn pet taunts off when entering a dungeon (taunts are growl, thunderstop, generally any small AOE your pet may have that causes aggro).
The Hunters Union website may be helpful to you.
Of all the classes, a hunter is probably the easiest.
You will level MUCH faster if you join a laid back 25 guild. One that is noob friendly.
Visit curse.com and look for add ons that will help. Also note a profession could be useful as well. -- Congress could mess up a one piece jigsaw puzzle. |

JS' Hunter Bar OMNI CC Deadly Boss Mods Raid Checklist (tells you which pet will fill in a missing buff)
BM and SV are the lead specs right now. MM is pretty far behind and shunned by most hunters. Theorycraft shows BM outDPS's SV but not by a terrible amount. I run SV since I enjoy the rotation much more.
For gear, agility is typically king. You don't want anything with intellect, spirit or strength. You also want to keep in all mail gear as this gives you a bonus. One piece of leather or cloth will break that bonus.
Icy veins has very good guides to gearing and playing a hunter. I've also used askmrrobot.com to guide me in gemming, enchanting and reforging my gear (stuff you don't need to worry about till you get till the highest levels). |

A hunter is a great class to start off with, good survivability and damage output(DPS).
-Honestly in terms of spec, just play which ever is more fun for you. The great thing about leveling is that you get to experiment.
-BM is a great spec for player vs player combat and it mostly relies on your pet for most of the damage.
MM is more reliant on you for damage output.
-In terms of gear/stats-Agility is king for hunters. Prior heroic dungeons minimum stats arent really important. Just try to focus on execution and teamwork.
-In dungeons, for BM, you want to try to maximize your damage output with a high damage pet. A ferocity(cat, wolf, i.e.) pet will help you do this.
also in a dungeon, you want to assist the tank. best way to do this if you're unsure what to attack is to target the tanks target.
very important- if you are in a dungeon, turn Growl off. This will make it easier for the tank round up the mobs so you can kill them.

| reply to HarryJWolf Aside from the other advice, pick up a farming profession and possibly a complimentary profession. For example herbing and alchemy / inscription or mining and blacksmithing / engineering. Hunters can easily farm nodes while their pets take care of NPC's. -- Congress could mess up a one piece jigsaw puzzle. |

| reply to HarryJWolf Hello, I have a level 90 hunter. He is a beast master.
As for professions, I picked up mining, because copper ore/ingots can sell for up to around 10 gold per 20 in the AH, or they did 4 years ago when I first started. They may have come down in price, and prices vary on each server. The second profession I trained was engineering. I like being able to attach scopes to weapons [they add damage], as well as making bombs to give my damage a boost.
I like Cats as my main fall to pet. I have a bear and a raptor named Dred [He was King Dred, until I tamed him.] Boars, Bears and turtles are good pets to keep the mobs off of you. They make decent tanks. Just watch their health and keep them healed. Also, be careful to keep your aggro low, if using pet as tank. Hence Feign death is a good thing to use, if the mobs start ganging up on you. The thing I hate about WOW, is that when your pet/minion makes a kill and you didn't assist, you can't loot the kill. It happens on my warlock, my hunter, my DK. If you don't do any damage to your minion/pet target, you wont be able to loot it.
*Note: like it has been suggested, when dungeon crawling, turn off thunder stomp, taunt, growl, roar. You don't want your pet taking the heat off of the tanks. The few times I went crawling with other people, I was made to stand back by the casters. I could send my pet in, keep him healed, but my main job was to protect the casters if they needed the heat taken off of them. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? I was going to say huntersunion, but I went there before answering you and found they haven't really been keeping it as up to date as I would like.
For add-ons, since you are just starting out I recommend spellflash so that it gives you a visual clue as to what your rotation should be.
For professions, my suggestion would be skinning and leatherworking since you can skin everything you kill and use the leather to make your own armor. Another good choice would be mining. -- Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul |

These are the most important things to keep in mind when you start dungeons...and they will still be valid at 90.
You want to attack what the tank is hitting - the faster it goes down, the better for all. Do keep an eye out for your healer, in case he/she is being attacked.
And you do not want to have your pet take aggro away from the tank. Drawing aggro is his job! |

Re: Brand new player needing some hunter advice Also, pets can have 3 different specializations. Tenacity (Tanking), Ferocity (DPS), and Cunning (PvPish). You can change your pet's spec as long as you're not in combat. So you can safely use the same pet for tanking while soloing as you do for DPS in dungeons. Just open the talent/specialization window, click the pet tab down at the bottom, and choose whichever, then learn down at the bottom, then click confirm button. Although you can probably leave pet as ferocity most of the time unless you're having trouble with a particular solo fight.
For gear, basically, if it's higher item level than what you have on, has agility, and is leather (until level 40, at which point you can use mail), then equip it. Don't worry too much about any other stat until max level. i don't recall when haste/crit start showing up, but for the most part at your level, if it has more agility, equip it. -- When the ship lifts, all bills are paid. No regrets. |

 | reply to HarryJWolf Didn't expect all the help thanks a lot guys. Some more info on my guy, i leveled up to 25 today. Did quite a few dungeons and did a pretty good job imo. I had tamed a bear but with all the feedback, i decided to get a cat when i saw one since i picked up a second pet perk. I got an invisible looking tiger who was being guarded.. can't remember his name now he was a lvl 19 when i was a 20. I had already picked prof's right off the bat from other videos ive seen.. I have leatherworking and skinning, which both seem to be very easy to level up. I think my skinning is already at like 175 and my leatherworking is around 75 (ive been selling some light and medium hides for gold) Seems like it was a good time to join wow with the bracelets selling for so much im up to about 200g now from selling those things for about 15g each . Other people on server are asking 25-50 so every time i post its instant buyers. I dont mind taking a little less because imo its ridiculous to ask that much for something thats so easy to get (just go kill stuff and you get the charms). My current addons im running are bagnon, postal, auctioneer, and i also have a gold/levling guide which is pretty good. I want to get a couple more my guildies recommended getting dbm for dungeons and ill probably look around for some hunter ones nad other little stuff as well. Id like one that could make my action bars smaller, and also one that would feature an auto run with a push of a button (if that exists). Pretty annoying having to hold down the mouse or keyboard non stop just to run. Im an ex guild wars player where all you did was hit r and you would run until you made yourself stop. I looted some pretty good stuff from the dungeons so far. I have 100+ armor rating on my pants and chest and close to that on everything else as well i believe with a lot of agility, crits, and even a +20 haste on one.. If someone could explain the agility vs spirit and all the other stuff a little more in depth i would appreciate that because i really am clueless when it comes to that and none of the vids ive been wwatching while at work have really went into it. Thanks again for all the help lovin this site!!!! |

Josof join:2010-10-23 Virginia Beach, VA | reply to HarryJWolf over the years WoW has been simplified. You really shouldnt worry about stats until you start getting into end game raiding.
for a hunter disregard everthing for now aside from Agility and Stamina.
Spirit/intellect/strength will not do anything for your character...remember WoW is very basic in terms of stat allocation.
When you get into the endgame raiding for pve you will start relying on your secondaray stats....hit rating/critical strike and to a lesser degree haste and mastery.
for endgame pvp again you will begin to stack pvp power and pvp resilience.
most of your dps output will be determined by finding a good rotation and maintaining a good rotation while dealing with encounter mechanics. And pvp, as you know being and ex guild wars player, is mostly situational. -- "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. | reply to HarryJWolf Simplified Spirit and Intel are what spell caters use to make a bigger bang, you dont cast spells. Your shooting arrows or bullets, to make them have a bigger bang you need agility. Shoot something there is a lot of in your area and watch the damage numbers, then do it with the same weapon but without cloths on and you should see and feel the difference.
I always recommend testing to any new player. Testing will give you more of a feel for mechanics than any text in a forum and will help you make decisions about gear you pick up that your unsure about. The more testing and experimenting you can cram in now the simpler life will be for you as more and more ability's enchants and gems become available to you. Switching new pieces of gear in and out and not only seeing the numbers change on your sheet but feeling the difference will help you no end when it becomes time to start balancing different stats, by then you will have cracked it. You can test while questing so it doesn't steal time from you.
The speed of leveling now is great for those that already have toons but many new players can blow thou it without actually learning anything and end up just cloning a build from wow best choices. The fact that your asking questions is great, keep it up. |
