[OS X] IMAP and Mail app

My co-worker has a MacBook with a relatively small HDD and a few days ago, started getting warnings about being low on disk space. We use Google Apps for email and his should be setup as IMAP (but I would have to double-check). Running a disk usage utility, his mail folder is over 40gb !! What's strange is that we have 25gb allowance on the Google side and he's using nothing near that amount.

I have noticed on the Google Mail side, he has no sub-folders, i.e. "Customers > Name 1, Name 2" and so on which he does have on his computer. Now I'm thinking his mail is "On My Mac" vs really being set up as IMAP. Maybe it's a hybrid IMAP setup.... Is that what it sounds like ?

If that's the case, I'm not too keen on the idea of re-configuring it to be fully IMAP. Long-term problem is that his mail file will never stop growing....

by default gmail accounts are setup as IMAP. You can check by going to Mail->Preferences->Accounts and seeing it it says IMAP or POP. If it's set to IMAP he should have a section in the sidebar with a header in all caps with the same name as the description listed in accounts. That would be where the folders you are looking for would be. If they aren't showing hover your mouse over the name and "SHOW" should show up.
