The problem, which affected services including Yahoo Mail and My Yahoo, lasted less than an hour, according to Yahoo and Web site performance measurement company Matrix NetSystems.

"For a brief period today of approximately 45 minutes, certain areas of Yahoo were inaccessible to a portion of users due to software-related issues," a Yahoo representative wrote in an e-mail statement.

Forty-five minutes my ass. From 0540 up to and including 1500 PST, there were issues with Yahoo email access. I know this for a fact because I attempted to check email throughout the day. Some spinmaster at Yahoo is tellin taaaaalll tales to minimize negative PR.

No kidding. And whats with the 'certain areas' rubbish? anyone who was away from the net might think it was a problem with some video clips or something...

And 'portion of users'? since ALL their DNS servers did not respond during the outage, thats the entire world, no?

Mealy-mouthed..

No, it's not. You have heard of caching name servers and clients? Thanks to the cache in W2K I once took several hours to notice the ISPs name servers were down.

Also, I think its quite transparent that the portion of Yahoo users being referenced was that portion who could not connect during the time period involved. I certainly doubt that every user in the world tried during that brief period of time.

caching name servers do not cache sub-domain IPs unless you've put a special client on (the minority!).

to say that just a portion of frequent yahoo users (the portion that tried) is misleading.. that is like a TV station saying during a blackout that only a portion of viewers lost the signal.

How do you turn that on?? I'm running on Win2K at work, and I notice right away when our company DNS servers go down...

CONTROL PANEL | ADMIN TOOLS | SERVICES then scroll down to DNS Client, right-click on it and select PROPERTIES. Set the STARTUP TYPE to AUTOMATIC (which I believe is the default). Rebooting or turning off the machine may clear the cache. I never looked since I keep the machines running all the time.

In 2K/XP you can add multiple name servers (not just two) so now as a precaution I add extras (my ISP, my Work, and those from a service one of my friends runs - five or six total in that order). Something you might want to consider.

I dont believe that caches subdomain IPs .. only top level domains. Having multiple DNS servers is no help if the authority dns server is no longer responsive for the sub-domain..

It certainly appears to:
ipconfig /displaydns

netinfo.hqnoc.noaa.gov
----------------------------------------
Record Name . . . . . : netinfo.hqnoc.noaa.gov
Record Type . . . . . : 1
Time To Live . . . . : 19648
Data Length . . . . . : 4
Section . . . . . . . : Answer
A (Host) Record . . . : 140.90.148.33

(as an example)

Yes, about multiple servers and authorities but the person was asking about his corp. servers going down. When I added the multiple servers it was because my former ISP started having freq. DNS server problems over several weeks. They won't handle issues like the Yahoo thing but they will work if your ISP or corp. name servers tend to have problems and you need a temporary substitute to keep you going. In other words, it's a workaround for undependable service.
