Im Here To Defend Roger's Hitron Modem/Router

Im here to defend Roger's maligned Hitron modem/router that so many here talk about that it "sucks" and that its wifi range is dismal. Bunch of baloney.

I got it 2 weeks ago and it's 3 times faster than my old modem. Now what about the much criticized wife range? Its excellent! I have the modem inside my walk-in closet which I converted to my computer room, Im parked 70-ft outside my house and I get about 45% wifi signal strength even though the Hitron has to go through 3 solid walls to reach outside. So this means that if there were no walls this thing will reach my phone more than 150 ft away!

And some people here still whine about wifi range? Anyways thats all I have to say, Im happy with this combo unit... oh and it has not dropped the internet in straight 14 days, I will report back when it has not dropped the signal in 3 straight months.

Well, it is nice that you are experiencing something positive with the Hitron modem and that it is working well for you. On the other hand, there are many that are not getting the results that you are and to call them whiners and state that their complaints are a "bunch of baloney" is much like what Rogers does; they discredit valid and legitimate concerns! Let me ask you this. If one person out of 10 (you) has success with a modem while the other 9 experience problems, would you still consider the Hitron to be a great modem?

I've learned to take everything Xstar_Lumini See Profile says with a grain of salt.

I've also had no issues whatsoever with the Hitron Modem/Router. It does what it's suppose to do and does it well enough.

Okay. Any of you familiar with hardware know performance varies by model number. Generally a newer model contains enhanced firmware and upgraded components.

Rogers has released the Hitron CDE-30364, the succesor to the original Hitron CGN2-ROG. There could be other models or firmware upgrades in between.

The general consensus across the web was that the HITRON CGN2-ROG was an abysmal failure.

Bottom line: You need to post the exact model number/firmware version when posting hardware performance.

If it is 3 times faster it is because you have moved to a faster plan. The Express plan is the same speed on a Hitron modem as it is on a Cisco modem. The same with all the other plans.

I call Bull sh1t! You have had something two weeks and you can clearly call yourself an expert. You are 70ft outside your house and you figure you get about 45% wifi. Again, I call bs, unless you live on a farm, with no one around you, and nothing to interfere with it. Wireless N, at best is about 300ft indoors, modems that have internal antenna, easily drops that range to about 150-200ft. In fact, I have installed many wireless routers, I cannot think of 1 install where I have managed to get 250ft radius without external, regular gain antenna's, running wireless N, on either the 5 or 2.4GHz bands. On the 2.4GHz, a lot less, due to interference. The 5GHz band was far more forgiving.

I have seen these modems with ranges of less than 100ft, with no real obstructions, that the customer supplied router was doubling before.

I would love to know how you measured your signal. I assume you sat there with your phone, and picked 45% based of the bars of the signal strength, rather than using a real tools. More important, as signal strength drops, so does packets that are coming to the device, as this gets worse, things stop working.

Sorry, but I have just seen and read too many reviews on them, they are garbage.

So THAT'S what I'm doing wrong! Silly me has been sitting comfortably in my living room all this time, when really I should have been sitting out in the middle of the cul-de-sac instead!

But seriously...just because you're having a good experience doesn't negate the fact that many (myself included) have not. It's not that the wifi is useless, but it's definitely a (big) step in the wrong direction compared to the DPC3825 that I had to give up.

How things have changed; see »How Do I Change The Wi-Fi Name On Hitron CGN2-ROG? especially

**EDIT** The Hitron's wi-fi range kinda sucks... 3 out of 5 bars strength only 20.ft away from the modem? C'mon.....

No. I have been with the extreme tier for several years and my speeds were 8/1 all the time, then I saw in this forum that people on the express tier were talking about speeds of 16/1 and I said WTF? I called Rogers and we discovered that my Scientific Atlanta 2100 modem from 2006 was outdated even for 2006! I immediately went to a Rogers Plus store and got the new modem, now the speeds are constant 33/2.5 but late at night they are 76/3.

Elitefx: I have the HITRON CGN2-ROG indeed.

@ TROG: My complaint then was mostly about not being able to access the control panel and change the password, concerning the wi-fi range it was sucky due to the cheap smartphone I was doing the wi-fi test with... but with my Galaxy S3 I get 100% strength signal at 20 ft away through a wall and a door. Yes, the phone's wi-fi radio makes the difference, don't thrash the modem because of your cheap smartphones.

VIPER359 doesn't believe me. I measured that distance from my car to the outside wall of my house, 70 ft.

LOL, I am not talking about the distance from your car to your house, I am talking about measuring your signal you claim at 45%, @70ft, outside your house. Thanks for proving my point.

I have no doubt you got out your measuring tape, just to measure the distance from your house to your car, just so you could make this post. /rolls eyes

Maybe the guy's got a couple hundred invested in hardware compatibility. Ya need to take the total cost into consideration when deciding which ISP to run with.

You guys seem to think you can switch ISPs on a dime. By the time you lay out $200 for a Gateway and another $150 for a compatible router you tend to think twice before making the leap.

What good is a cheaper/different ISP if you've thrown $350 down the drain????

All routers are compatible with any ISP, its the gateway or modem that is different.

That being said, I always rent, but, in fairness, haven't paid for a modem rental in years. Modems are always changing, so I would rather the rental option, so I always have the latest, if required, without the need to spend hundreds.

Routers with me change about every two years, lately, seems every year. I usually push routers down the chain, since I use several, so when I get a new one, the one I was using as my main gets push further down the chain, until my oldest one is gone. I use so many, to extend my wireless around the house. Where I can, I use switches.

I hear ya. My point is basically, some of us have thousands tied up in our rigs and hardware. When we finally get it working in tandem and at peak performance the last thing we want to do is tear it down (even partially) because of some ISP self serving bullshit.

That's why I'm still with Rogers. Because I care more about my equipment (which I own) than those AHoles.

Used high end gear is hard to sell at a decent price these days. You still take a big hit when you've bought it new and it's barely used. Makes switching that much harder.
