[Cable] BC Cable Jitter Test

Click for full size
I'm trying to decide if I switch to cable or DSL in the Vancouver area. I've checked the connections of a few people I know on Shaw and while congestion doesn't seem to be much of a problem, their connections get very jittery when their downstream is loaded.

I was hoping I could get a couple of people here on the 25 Mbit cable plan to either run a ping test at pingtest.net or ping google while downloading at around 20 Mbps.

The reason I'm not asking for a full speed download is the buffers on your modem and router will fill up, causing huge latency spikes. I'm trying to get an idea of the amount of jitter on a connection with mostly empty buffers.

Thanks.

This is from Langley. Ran a few tests, all while downloading throttled to ~20Mbps. YMMV.

I've had service for two weeks and I've been very satisfied.

I was a bit nervous about cable after testing a 100 Mbit Shaw connection that was showing 50+ ms of jitter. I tested another 10 Mbit Shaw connection after that and saw close to 10 ms of jitter on it.

So thanks for running that. I'd like to avoid handing the dry loop fee over to Telus if possible.

I hear that. I've avoided cable internet since Rogers owned the assets here in BC... so that was around 2000 / 2001.

Jitter is important to me as well - my phone is voip, primary television watching is Netflix - no noticeable jitter issues with TekSavvy so far. Considering the best Shaw can do for comparable price is 10 down 0.5 up with a 125gb cap, even just trying TekSavvy is worth the risk, IMHO.

Yeah same with us, and I would be happy giving Telus $75 / month for this connection with the extra bandwidth available for more than one device to be active at once. Its also very nice having 10 Mbit upload.

But with their current practices of jacking all of their prices way up constantly, slashing the caps, talking about implementing an overage system and starting to charge for installs I figured it was time to vote with my wallet.

Yep. I specifically left as a result of the 500GB/mo cap on the 25MB connection being dropped to 250GB/mo all while the price had gone up around $10 in the previous 12 months.

I started on the 25 Mbps plan at $47 less than a year ago, and its now $60 or $65 unbundled.

What really gets me is how they think a 6 Mbps connection can possibly be worth $50 / month? Really Telus?

I'm talking about when the connection is under fairly heavy load, not when its idle.
